Parallel ambitions

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 25/01/2012

» We wish them the best of luck, and we pray Hua Hin International Film Festival won't turn out to be a lemon. A month ago hardly anybody had heard about this brand-new event, and now those who've heard about it are wondering if they'll take the trouble of making a trip down to the seaside town to watch the films. Our advise is, if the sky is blue and you have nothing else to do (and if you want to forsake the Bangkok Experimental Film Festival that will also happen this weekend) just go for the fun of it. Worst case, you can always decamp to the beach, or one of the seafood joints in Khao Takieb.

Mind trip

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 06/07/2012

» Eric Packer is a brilliant currency trader, played with scowls and smirks by Robert Pattinson. In David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis, adapted from Don DeLillo's novel of the same name, Eric, in pursuit of the plummeting yuan (it's yen in the book) and a haircut, rides across Manhattan in his dazzlingly white stretch limo, long as a coffin, noiseless as the interior of a whale. The world is crumbling around him; the anarchists are parading a huge rat statue around and a Time Square screen summons up Marx. It's a protest against the future, says one character. On TV, the IMF chief is seen being stabbed in the eye by an attacker in North Korea.

Howlings of a haunted Wolf

Life, John Clewley, Published on 09/10/2012

» Howlin' Wolf was one of the most influential blues musicians of all time. His music influenced rock 'n' roll and the development of modern popular music; his stage act, in which he dropped to all fours, crawling and howlin', inspired countless imitators, as did his deep, rich baritone voice. But unless you were, to paraphrase a line from one of Willie Dixon's songs (expressly written for the Wolf), over 300lbs (135kg) and wore size 14 shoes, you would be hard-pressed to measure up to one of the USA's great musical icons.

Born in Chile, educated in Denmark and from a mixed Israeli, Russian and Italian background, Marco now divides his time between Bangkok and Copenhagen. Born into Judaism, he later converted to Buddhism.

» The future may have already arrived; well, for those of us who live in Asia's cities. As is regularly and widely reported, the rapid rate of urban growth and change in this part of the world leaves most of us reeling. As soon as we begin to understand the present, it is usually already past.
