    The man behind the icon

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 16/06/2023

» The earliest memory I have of Arnold Schwarzenegger was when he was already a Hollywood action superstar. Movies like The Terminator (1984) and Commando (1985) were big successes that came out at the perfect time when the action genre in Hollywood was switching from typical crime and car chase movies to muscular, Herculean male action heroes. At the time I also knew that Arnie was a successful professional bodybuilder before his acting career, but I hardly knew anything other than that.

    A forgettable action flick

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 26/05/2023

» How often do we find action movies produced by Netflix to be generic? Yet the platform keeps giving us new such flicks. Netflix's latest action/thriller, The Mother starring Jennifer Lopez, is about an assassin who has to come out of hiding to protect a child in danger. It seems as if it can garner attention, but will the storytelling and execution do it justice?

» Whether you are a fan of big-budget action or heist genre films, seeing massive Hollywood stars like Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Gal Gadot plastered on the poster of the latest Netflix original Red Notice felt like a no-brainer crowd pleaser. A mouse trapped in a violent maze

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 20/08/2021

» If you enjoy thriller movies and are looking for something along the lines of a classic cat and mouse scenario, then be sure to check out the Netflix original Beckett. The film stars Tenet (2020) actor John David Washington and is the debut directorial film by Ferdinando Cito Filomarino, who was an assistant director of Call Me By Your Name (2017) and Suspiria (2018). Beckett is a compelling paranoia/survival/conspiracy thriller about a tourist who's deep-down on his luck.

    Roller-coaster ride of silly action

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 06/08/2021

» In the late 80s to mid-90s, if you were looking for an action star who could kick butt, you were probably looking at Jean-Claude Van Damme whose movies like Bloodsport (1988), Kickboxer (1989), Double Impact (1991) Universal Soldier (1992), Hard Target (1993) and Maximum Risk (1996) were among martial arts action favourites. Now in his 60s, the man is back with this action-packed French parody The Last Mercenary about a secret agent-turned-mercenary who comes out of hiding in order to protect his son from being assassinated.

    The Lovebirds glides along

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 05/06/2020

» I discovered both director Michael Showalter and actor Kumail Nanjiani for the first time back in 2017 at the press screening for a romcom I then knew very little about called The Big Sick. And with its indie-ish charm, Nanjiani's witty performances, clever jokes about romance and cultural identity, The Big Sick turned out to be one of the movies I most remember from that same year. So I was really excited to hear they teamed up once again in the new comedy The Lovebirds, which is now streaming on Netflix. And although the new film is an entirely different beast and may not be as good as its predecessor, The Lovebirds still manages to deliver a semi-good laugh, and a heartwarming love story.
