    Romance and rage

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 20/07/2018

» The air in that rural village is impregnated by unsettling emotions and propaganda announcements from loudspeakers. Three people sit drinking and talking in front of an old house: an honest, confused young man; a pretty, even also confused young woman; and a rich, suave, sport-car-driving playboy, so sure of himself and the power he has over the other two.

    The fire still burning

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 03/03/2016

» It was never business as usual for Santana, despite this being his sixth visit to Bangkok. On Monday night, we got what we're always happy to get from Carlos and his band -- thrilling musicianship, fiery Latin polyrhythms, passionate guitar solos, tribal percussive beats, a message of joy and love, and of course the 1,001st performance of Black Magic Woman and other classics. Carlos Santana, 68, continues to work his guitar hard as he put fire in the old melodies (he's probably the only performer of the 1969 Woodstock who's still touring inexhaustibly), and although the guitar-based Latin rock is hardly coursing the vein of the 21st-century soundscape, he never tires of making it authentic and fun.

    Coldplay across the universe

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 07/02/2024

» The latest Coldplay concert in Bangkok was a feat of photogenic spectacles designed to bedazzle, complete with light-blinking wristbands, sci-fi-warped animation on spherical screens, balloons in the shape of planets and exploding fireworks above the roof of Rajamangala National Stadium ("The football field not often used to play football on," as a Thai national squad member noted.)

    Glowing in the moonlight

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 10/02/2017

» The best film among the Oscar's Best Picture nominees, Moonlight glows like an iridescent animal, tender in touch and sensitive to the complexity of life -- black life, or masculine life, or black masculine life, or maybe just life. It's also a film about sexuality and identity, the two forces intersecting at the burning crossroads of race.

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 15/04/2016

» The Chinese comedy The Mermaid became the biggest-grossing film ever in China when it came out during Chinese New Year, raking in US$417 million (14.6 billion baht), surpassing last year's hit Monster Hunt and Fast And Furious 7. Even without the hype, fans of Stephen Chow -- and there's plenty of them in Thailand -- have been looking forward to his latest madcap escapade, this time with the story of a pretty mermaid who falls in love with an ocean-destroying, banknote-burning real estate tycoon who's also her target.

    When literature becomes light

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 23/07/2018

» Haruki Murakami's books exert a strange pull that's earned him a devoted following around the world -- and Thailand is no exception. One foot planted in the reality of the modern world, the other trudging through a surreal dreamland as the ground beneath his characters' feet keeps shifting, Murakami entrances and confuses, lulls and hallucinates. His novels and short stories also occupy that exclusive territory in the literary world: he's a best-selling author who's also every bookmaker's favourite to win the Nobel Prize. He's also one of a few post-war Japanese writers whose style and substance transcend cultural and national boundaries.
