Beat the booze, for Buddha's sake

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 19/07/2016

» As a nation that makes some of the funniest advertisements in the world, it is no surprise that we are resorting to humour yet again to encourage less drinking on the advent of Buddhism's most important period -- Buddhist Lent. While monks are required to be in one particular temple or place, followers of the faith are encouraged to visit temples, listen to sermons and abstain from drinking alcohol, as one of the five precepts of the religion.

    In the dark

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 13/01/2016

» Thailand's advertising industry occupies both the highest and lowest grounds when it comes to pushing creativity. We're often regarded as the funniest peddlers in the world, and there's a long string of Cannes trophies and instantaneous LOL-reactions to prove it. But, at the opposite end of the spectrum, we also sometimes attract international media attention for the wrong reasons, such as the discriminating ads that continue to infiltrate the public sphere. Last week, beauty company Seoul Secret caused an uproar with its whitening pill tagline that brazenly voiced what other skin-whitening ads in Thailand have been subliminally implying for decades: "You just need to be white to win."

    Farang food with a zapp

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 10/07/2015

» In the traffic war zone that is Vibhavadi, it may just be smarter to stick around for a bit to let the gridlocks die down before heading home. Nothing sounds bad about merrymaking after work anyway, especially when there's lots of booze to choose from — wines, cocktails, beer towers galore — and food made to go with it as well.

    Uncommonly agreeable

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 29/08/2014

» The upscale som tum trend has definitely left the building to make room for a more versatile, all-pleasing dining experience. What used to be Papa Paya on the ground floor of Chamchuri Square has now turned into Common Room, a hip, contemporary haunt that serves international cuisine with friendly price tags for the college and office crowd. Of course, Chamchuri Square is not exactly the first place that comes to mind when I ponder unique culinary offerings — and why any Chula graduate would want to unwind so close to their old university (and be reminded of all those insufferable hours of studying and stress) is beyond me.

    Where simple meets sumptuous

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 09/05/2014

» Ladies, for once in your life, you might want to head to one of those masculine hangout joints people call a tavern — one that serves heavy cocktails and high-quality grub in a sleek atmosphere, that is.

Are these really the ‘Golden Years’?

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 14/04/2014

» Yesterday marked Thailand’s Day of the Elderly, and if Thai customs have conditioned you just right, one of the most disconcerting sights you could possibly witness is of an elderly person still working. Our mentality that we should always care for our parents in old age makes us shudder at the reality of old folks still toiling away to make ends meet.

    'Tween-Times tidbits

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 15/11/2013

» If you had suggested a breakfast date five years ago, your friends would probably have looked at you like you'd just suggested they shave their heads. Going out for brunch, let alone breakfast, is hardly part of the Thai lifestyle, with its roots in Western culture. Nevertheless, breakfast and all-day-dining venues have been deluging Bangkok, attracting hordes of trend-followers _ if not the genuinely famished _ with their naked lightbulb decor and staples of egg-based dishes.
