For natural appetites

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 25/08/2017

» You don't have to be a green geek to enjoy The Green Geek. Although, if you're super into all things organic, healthy and natural, then you will appreciate this store and cafe all the more. It's sorta' like a treasure trove for all things green; well... almost all things! Too bad if you're into a certain shade of green that shan't be mentioned here.

    It's all about roots

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 19/05/2017

» The setting: Several months ago an awesome little venue called Roots set up shop in K Village and the place seems to have made an impression on the area as quite the community has now been built around this bar and grill. Crowds gather here regularly, especially during weekends to chillax, eat soul food and listen to good music. The venue is comprised of both an indoor seating area and a large outdoor garden area that has direct access to a children's playground. So, it's kid-friendly and pet-friendly too. Despite the heat, we must admit it's pretty awesome sitting outside. Sip adequately intoxicating drinks and listen to DJs Octave and KC play funky beats while simultaneously watching delicious pizzas and Turkish bread being baked before your very eyes. #chilledvibes

    Kiki Made some bomb munchies

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 30/12/2016

» I came across Kiki Made's booth about a year ago at a Kolour In The Park do and I remember being so blown away; usually at music festivals you'll get some really unhealthy food that just adds to that awful hangover you really don't need. But there was Kiki, a vision, handing out bowls of goodness that made many tummies sing. So, when I heard she had finally opened up a bowl bar in Ekamai at the Light Room -- a whitewashed room with tall ceilings, white painted bar stools and white mannequin heads and torsos dotted behind the bar -- I went. Immediately.

    The game changer

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 09/12/2016

» The setting: When we heard that The Reflexions had recently taken on its first lady head chef, Dutch national Roxanne Lange, we headed on right over to the Plaza Athénée. After all, this marks a new chapter in the restaurant's storied history. And, what a way to put a fresh interpretation on modern French cuisine -- by adding some warmly welcomed feminine and Dutch flavours to the mix. Chef Lange, having previously worked under Michelin Star guidance at the Savelberg, brings with her a wealth of knowledge in French cuisine as well as her training from Rotterdam too. The restaurant itself, tucked away on the third floor of the hotel, has dim and intimate lighting. The notes of a live piano, played by Jean Francois, The Reflexions resident French pianist, grace the space with sounds of jazz tunes interwoven haphazardly with classical and romantic all-time greats.

    Absolutely fabulous

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 02/12/2016

» Having professional health and beauty experts on call to come into my home had always been something I'd dreamed of having, but I was always too lazy (and quite frankly, not clever enough) to build an app for it. I had it drilled into my brain that such luxuries were only reserved for Kardashian-calibre celebrities. But with FABbrigade, a Bangkok-based app that answers every woman's (and man's) pampering needs, I've been proved wrong. If you've got a smart phone, you need this in your life, ASAP. Save your credit deets on there and the beauty world becomes your pearl-filled oyster. If you've got enough cash, that is.

    From nightclubs to nature

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 18/11/2016

» As Bangkok's nightclubs cool down on their opening hours and the weather follows suit with cooler and more bearable temperatures, the urge to spend time in nature has grown. Call us crazy but there's something so soothing about spending time immersed in greenery, inhaling nothing but oxygen and the smell of real earth, instead of that foul drain smell Bangkokians have become accustomed to. Wasn't it amid such greenery, in a forest not so far away that the Lord Buddha found enlightenment? OK, we're not suggesting you escape the city life to reach nirvana or anything. Unless of course, you want to. But, it's good to know that a lot of peace and tranquillity can come from just sitting still and, without sounding too cheesy, taking in the beauty and wonder that is nature.

    Toro, today and tomorrow!

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 14/10/2016

» The Setting: With a name like Toro, you might expect medieval looking (and smelling) walls draped with bull heads, men boasting bare tattooed arms, floors covered in hay, waiters dressed in red running for their lives and other bits of evidence pointing towards man's obsession with the blood sport of bull fighting. Or maybe we got a bit carried away there, whoops. Toro Bangkok is far from all that, thankfully. Being the last of the restaurants we'll have visited in the upper floor of the courtyard, we certainly mean what we say when we declare it to be our favourite.

    What's spinning on GURU FM

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 05/08/2016

» "Without music, life would be a mistake", said existentialism's darling, Friedrich Nietzsche. Guru does solemnly agree. And who pushes a significant portion of music in this city? Bangkok's live DJs, of course! They're like our unsung heroes, our hidden gems. They really do hold the keys to our city!
