Learning about Thai ladies in marriage and culture

By Anonymous, Created on: 23/08/2003, Last updated on: 21/10/2007

» I would like to learn about the Thai lady in marriage and the Thai culture. The reason for this, is that after literally travelling the world for many years, during work commitments, and meeting along the way many ladies for serious relationships. I met along the way a lady from Thailand. We met many...

    • Anonymous commented : er help you, i am in the same boat i have been dating one for a month, very dediacted and devoted people, its all going to take time western culture and thai cultures are worlds apart, most dont understand americans way of being independant, since the family is the core, follow your heart, go by instincts, ask questions, i know i am going to slip up and goof up somewhere along the line, my fear of emabarrasing myself my be one thing i can live with that but to be disrespectful by ignorance or not knowing is another, i am goin to copy and paste my ladys sisters fiance from virgina and his words here.................Well its good to meet you, and I am sure Mali had some thoughts behind this. She has fears that I will feel lonely in Thailand, so she is trying to make things a little better for me, lol. You will discover that the Thai people do not really understand that most Americans are kind of independent, this is not their way at all. They love their families, the children, and us older people. The Thai's also have strong morals, no public displays, kissing in public could bring the neighbors talking to the family. They really do not like to see Farangs wearing cut offs, or tank tops, and laugh when they can't take the heat. But they are also quick to help, and show respect to you. Also be careful about touching the head, it comes from Buddhism, and it is disrespectful to touch the head. When you rub your face, or scratch it, they think something is wrong with you. Oh yeah, don't set down and point your feet at someone, that is also very disrespectful, fold them backwards, if you can. I know a few words, and if you wish to learn a little, buy a tape. Many Thai words have more than one meaning, it depends on the tone you use, when saying it as to which one it means. Good luck with everything, and let me know how it is going. i hope any of this helps don

    British Embassy in Bangkok

By Anonymous, Created on: 05/10/2004, Last updated on: 25/02/2011

» In March, my Thai partner wanted to visit me in London. Before granting a visa, the Embassy wanted a mountain of paperwork including proof of my income, whether or not I woned my own home and a whole lot of other things. At this stage, I have to say that we have many controversial issues in the UK...

    • Anonymous commented : going. Well, I am in the same boat and can pretty much confirm all your worst fears. There is corruption in the Bangkok Embassy ( I only wish I knew the system before I made a legal application) and there are all sorts of ways to bring your Thai partners in (via the back door). The chinese do it nicely by applying to a country that is a little less stringent, say Belgium or Eire and then once settled make the E.U. hop into the U.K. My original post, " Ways and means of entry into U.K. for Thai nationals" explains my situation with just as much response and support as you see here. My Thai wife is still in Thailand, she's a university graduate in business and I have the support of my MP and enquiriesmade on my behalf by David Treisman, The Lord Treisman of Tottenham. Even a Lord cannot swing it for me. I cannot get an interview with David Fall, the Ambassador in Bangkok, even though it is my right. By god I want to complain! What I would like to know is, is anyone of any worth reading this, anyone who can make a difference, anyone with some sort of power to make change? If not, we are all lost causes and things will continue as they are. As for the BangkokEmbassy staff, they are all very rude, over officious, faceless beaurocrats who really don't give a damn about you or I, let alone some foreign spouse or partner. They are omnipotent in respect of who they grant a visa to. An appeal, I hear you cry! After six months Bangkok have finally released our application papers to the U.K. so we can now expect an appeal date for some one or two years hence, (due to the backlog of asylum seekers I am reliably informed). When the civil uprising begins, someone give me a shout beacuase I hold this country in the lowest of esteems... Good Luck all!

    • Anonymous commented : that's what floats your boat then who are we to judge and take the moral high ground. It matters not, you will all be dealt the same blow when you sit before the ECO. Its a big game really, more of luck and cunning than sincerity and justice. Why not all get together, outside the Tribunal (88 Rosebery Ave., London. EC1) and hold against your chests a picture of your spouse/partner. A bit of news coverage goes a long way to highlight this sort of injustice. As a 'founding' member of Fathers 4 Justice, I know this sort of campaign works - it just depends how eager you all are to make it work. Maybe apathy will rule as usual! I'll be there on the 16th January 2006 at 10am. Maybe see some of you there...? Good Luck

My 15 year old daughter could not go out alone after 6.pm Australia has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, the highest gambling and the second juvenile delinquancy rate in the developed world. It laso has many supporters of racist Pauline Hanson. I hope Thailand never develops into any thing like Australia

    • villager commented : all the unemployed relatives, boats burnt and no way out of a lawless country heading towards total anarchy or Burmese style military dictatorship (it's on the cusp and could go either way) Get into trouble of any kind and no one will help least of all the police , try reading other threads like "Tourism what are they thinking?" "new visa rules for foreigners" "A storm is coming for us..." "Multiple Farang Deaths in Phuket" "Rude immigration staff" "PAD and foreigners" "DEVALUE THAILAND BAHT" and "Thailand NOT For Sale" They'll give you a fair idea of what to expect, the Land of Smiles is a misnomer now I know I tried living there from 2001 to 2007 and left for civilised English speaking Malaysia With the THB at 52 to the GBP bring as little as possible, wait a few weeks and you'll see it revalued to 65+ Opening a bank account is easy, just walk into the Kasikorn with THB10,000 and your passport (they issue an ATM card on the spot and charge THB300 for it) I was 62 when I did it in 2002 at 4 different banks in Bangkok (they never mentioned a work permit) Take your time is good advice (about 20 years should be enough) and don't rush into anything, she ain't going to run away as walking ATMs are thin on the ground in Thailand right now I expect you're already sending money, I knew girls in Phuket who had up to six i.diots doing the same, have you bought her a new mobile yet, how's her mother's operation and is the sick buffalo better yet Maybe you should rethink the whole thing unless you like walking in minefields, that is [/quote:7ejb8ow2] Yep The prophet from Penang speaks out eh, mind you Pappy it did take you almost 6 years before the penny finally dropped did,nt it , which even you have to admit is quite some time for a guy like yourself who seems to have all the answer,s,LOLOL.

Do You Support Your Thai In-Laws?

By Anonymous, Created on: 02/03/2006, Last updated on: 14/02/2007

» In Thailand, children take care of their parents. They kind of pay back the debt that they contracted just by being born and educated by their parents. And contrary to "popular" belief, it is valid whether you are rich or poor (but of course far more meaningful if the parents are poor...)....

    • Anonymous commented : girls. I'm in the same boat with you. Except that I'm a Thai who was robbed in the business deal with my Thai friend. Yes, Thais rob Thais. You only lost money. You lucky dog ! I lost $$$$$ to my old friend ( had known him for 43 yrs) and a longtime frendship. Sad to say, several Thai expats in the US had warned me the same things. But knowing him since our youth, I trusted him. The problem is Thais see their Thai expats as a money tree. Since we make money in $$. Let's say you want to buy a parcel of land. They will inflate the price ( like double tiers fee, one for local, and one for US). In my case not only I paid almost one third more ( the other Thai friend told me after seeing the contract.), this friend never honour our contract. He was very good at twisting the words in the contract. I have an option, take this case to the court. Be realistic, times and expenses traveling back and forth between US and Thailand. Besides can you count on the Thai Court legal system ? Most people know about kangaloo court. Also I should mention this friend is a police general. So I just leave it alone for a time being. As I believe in karma. There will be a judgement day.

Freedom of Ownership by Owning Boathouse

    • dilpickles commented : & sister-n-law own 3 houseboats in Kanchanburi, they are fish framers, once a yr. the whole family goes there for a 3-5 day vacation. My bro-in-law is also the head of river management & enforces the laws of the river. They have been there for many yrs.. My wife said she thinks they pay about 2,000 THB a mo. for the use of the land where they are anchored to the shore. They have every modern convenience, solar cells on the roof,& pwr. lines running from the shore, catch basin & purifying sys. for rain water, satellite dish for TV, & ADSL. I have seen basic floor plans, or you could work with the builder & design your own. Depending on size they start at about $10,000 USD. I have seen houseboats that look as though they are farang owned or at-least farang designed. The in-laws are located around the river bend from the Phornphailan Riverside Resort, the house boats are even visible with Google earth. We normally stay at the resort as when the family is all there space is limited & being retired, & a city man, I love my creature comforts. We are either picked up from the shore by one of 4 long tails, or a 10 min walk. Houseboats rented by tourist, are towed to different tourist sites by long-tail, staying a day or 2 at a time. These seem to be pretty comfortable, with battery pwr. A/C, & a nice deck for hanging out outside There are no hi-powered boats, or even jet-ski's allowed. I have watched basic houseboat construction of bamboo for Thais with no amenities except those required by law, which besides a septic tank I don't know of. Most use solar pwr. LED lights at night, or have battery rigs. The question for me is could I live there. Have only seen Japanese tourist & only once 2 female farang missionaries in this area. In the next 2 yrs.[b:yybf14e1]We will have to make the decision of buying a house & where, but houseboat is & option, one much cheaper than house. [/b:yybf14e1]Next time up there will get more info, & report back if this thread is still alive.
