» I have just finished reading the third novel in Robert Harris's brilliant trilogy based on the life of Cicero. It's about politicians who struggle to practise and defend democracy, but fail because of the corruptibility and greed of many of them. The politicians are divided, and some favour allowing the all-powerful general, Julius Caesar, to take control of the empire.

» I suspect there is more at play than mere incompetence with regard to the excessive "pruning" of Bangkok's urban trees (BP, April 27). At least some of the trees in question are Burma padauk (known in Thailand as pradu, and scientifically as Pterocarpus macrocarpus).

» So, on Jan 8 we had the headline "Gov u-turns on Mor Chana" concerning the tracking device Mor Chana. And "Covid travel permit 'impractical'" concerning interprovincial travel documents. And with many other backtracking moves by those in power, it once again shows that decisions are made without thinking them through.
