Home Sweet Home - Thailand vs Malaysia?

By GerBo, Created on: 08/08/2009, Last updated on: 28/04/2010

» I live now exactly 2 years in Thailand with my Thai spouse and see the following things in this 'Land of Smile' to foreigners. I see it sometimes more as discrimination of foreigners in this country. 1. VISA-paper work to overreacting and very unfriendly; 2. Very tough to open a initial savingsaccount...

    • Jason McDonald commented : on; 6. Can not buy a car/motorbike without a normal house-registration or Certificate of Residence; 7. Block ur savingsaccount when a sum of equivelent 10.000 EUR is getting on ur account from abroad; When u see te aboved point (and for sure I missed some) I think this Land of Smile is really a kind of paranoid. There is only one thing u may do in this country and makes them really having a smile: ACCEPTING UR FOREIGN MONEY!! No restrictions at all. huh? how can? [quote] OK yes Thailand does discriminate against foreigners especially farang. It's not going to change so you have to do things smarter to have a good life in Thailand. Someone once told me that "everything three times in Thailand". Well this turned out to be correct except for banks where it is sometimes 10 times. After 4 times I got a bank account with atm card / debit card VISA. I buy airfare tickets with this VISA card worldwide as the price of tickets is pretty much half price compared to buying the same ticket in Australlia. So there is an advantage! Oh and I do get interest on the account much to my surprise. I have a three year visa into Thailand and all of SE asia includig China which gives me 90 day stays at a time. My Thai wife has multiple reentry visa for 90 day stays into Australia so we can pretty well move between OZ and THAI easily. But that visa took about 6 goes to get. Internet banking is a bit more difficult whilst I have bualuang iPay, Bualuang internet is more difficult. So far I have tried 4 times without success. But I will get it as I don't give up and it becomes a game for me. Just keep on trying eventually the lady behind the desk can not think of anything else for you to bring in and you get it. Play the Thai game like the Thais and you will get anything you want. Just takes time and imagination. Why do you want to buy land? Get your thai wife to buy the land you take out a 30 year lease and then you build the house. You own the lease and the house. After 30 years if you're still around dismantle the house and move it to another vacant lease that you have acquired. No hassle really. Just don't kick the farmers off their rice paddy leases if you happen to "own" farmng land. If they won't let you buy a car get your wife to buy it. Most likely she will get a better price then you anyway. You will be able to use it anytime you like. I'm always borrowing the wife's family's motor bikes etc. Nobody really seems to care really. I have never transferred that amount in one go so I don't know if they block it. But I had my VISA card frozen the other day becasue of a password problem and after three phone calls to Bangkok Bank from Australia the problem was solved. So my advise don't get frustrated (some may say that I'm being very hypocritical when I say that because I too get frustrated a lot of times) just don't give up and keep trying. After 100 times they will get sick of you and you will win.
