Disco queen and the volcano
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 27/05/2012
» The sad passing of Donna Summer and Robin Gibb in the past two weeks inevitably stirred memories of those distant days of disco, scarily more than three decades ago. Composer Quincy Jones called Summer "the heartbeat and soundtrack of a decade", and she was apparently a very nice lady along with it.

Celebrating daffodils, dahlias and dodgy perfumes
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 12/08/2012
» Since today is Mother's Day in Thailand it seems an appropriate time to talk about mums or mae, and for our North American friends, ''moms''. And we must not forget the mamas, madres and maters around the globe either. They are quite useful, after all. As someone once observed: ''God couldn't be everywhere, so he created mothers.''

Well, it all began with a lady in a bikini
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 07/10/2012
» It's not often I can recall my movements of five days ago, let alone five decades, but I do know that 50 years ago this week, I was standing in a long queue on a miserable wet night in my home town of Reading. The reason for this odd behaviour was the opening of the very first Bond film, Dr No, which was showing at the less than glamorous Reading Odeon.

A dip in Hua Hin, 44 years ago today
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 14/04/2013
» It is not often I can remember where I was four days ago, let alone 44 years, but a sorry-looking diary confirms that on April 14, 1969, I was in the Thai resort town of Hua Hin. The place was jammed with Songkran holidaymakers, but virtually no foreigners. I had only been in Thailand a few days and hadn't a clue what was going on. I had seen people throwing water at one another, but thought maybe it's what they did all the time just to keep cool.

Still searching for the sound of silence
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 28/04/2013
» Last Wednesday was International Noise Awareness Day, although if you live in Bangkok you could be forgiven for being blissfully unaware of this momentous occasion. It's hardly a revelation, but it's desperately difficult to escape noise in Thailand. You can't go to a department store or supermarket these days without being assaulted by an incessant babble of sales pitches from ladies with microphones, promoting anything from skin whitening creams to absurd looking lingerie.

'Ginger Pride' marchers paint the town red
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 18/08/2013
» Growing up with a mop of ginger hair, I was intrigued to see that Edinburgh last week hosted an inaugural "Ginger Pride" parade, a protest against ''gingerism'', the perceived prejudice or discrimination against people with natural red, or more likely, ginger hair.

Why I still remember September in the rain
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 01/09/2013
» Today we welcome in a new month, September, and to get in the spirit of things I've just put on an Earth Wind and Fire album at full blast, which includes their 1978 hit song September, a bouncy feel-good number. I even managed a little jig around the living room _ not a pretty sight. It certainly had the dog worried for a while.

The verdict is yours on the new tourist court
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 15/09/2013
» Best news of the week is the launching of a tourist court in Pattaya to speed up proceedings in minor cases. It means the jet ski scammers, rip-off artists and general riff-raff will all be immediately brought to justice _ well that's the theory.

Where hospitality is simply a way of life
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 17/11/2013
» It is hard not to have been affected by the harrowing scenes from the Philippines city of Tacloban and neighbouring areas following the devastating typhoon.
