» Eighteen years ago, thousands of local villagers living in the seasonally flooded lower part of tambon Kho Nua in Muang district, Yasothon, learned that their lives would change for the better after His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun, then the crown prince, visited them. His royal initiatives to dredge Nong Ung, a dry 430 rai swamp, improve soil quality in the community, and revitalise a damaged forest led to the villagers' better livelihood.

» Every Saturday morning, hundreds of people form a long queue for a visit to Bang Khun Phrom Palace. Once the home of Marshal-Admiral Prince Paribatra Sukhumbhand of Nagor Svarga (1881-1944) and now the Bank of Thailand Museum, the handsome residence has become a new attraction that draws huge interest of cultural tourists, local and international. Some of the visitors are late to the queue and have to return on another Saturday, since only 400 tickets are issued each day. From last month until the end of this year, the palace, normally open to group visits only, welcomes the public on an individual basis for the first time in decades.

Luckily, these books are on view during the "Rare Book Exhibition of the Bangkok Period from 1782-1910 (King Rama I—King Rama V) from the Collection of ML Manich Jumsai" at the Siam Society, Asok Road, until Saturday.

» Even without the intimidating darkness or the sounds of dogs howling, you could get goose-bumps when stepping into the Protestant Cemetery, or Susan Farang as it is called in Thai, on Charoen Krung Road. Behind the green iron fence lie hundreds of tombstones.
