    Zoom into Love

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 18/11/2016

» If you're a dancer or have ever been one, you'll know that most of it is practice. Practising at school. Practising at home. Practising on the streets. In the sheets -- wait no. The point is it's a lot of practise, a lot of behind-the-scene stuff. Which is not to say it isn't fun. It just makes the opportunity to finally perform in front of an audience all the more thrilling and worthwhile. That's the kind of attitude reverberating at Studio Zoom right now, as its 250 or so dancers prepare for the school's annual showcase.

Charles-Alexis Guenard, also studying at ABAC but in the faculty of communication arts, is a half-Thai and half-French 20-year-old who was born in France. Together, they form a charismatic magic duo known as "Charles The French and Tada" who perform all over the country in major hotels, shopping venues and occasionally on television. We had a chat with the pair and it was everything one could hope for in an interview — reeking with personality.

    Youth, love and heartache

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 23/09/2016

» In Bangkok, when you're down for a movie, it's rare to have the opportunity to see short films by emerging Thai filmmakers -- about as rare as it is for these types of films to be screened in a theatre as popular as SFX. This is exactly why Lost In Blue is important. Lost In Blue is a collection of three short films by young Thai visionaries playing in theatres now. Last year, we interviewed one of the filmmakers, Paphawee Jinnasith, for her short Glowstick, which is also showing in this event. This year, we wanted to get to know another featured filmmaker. Guru talks to 24-year-old Aekaphong Saransate about the movie event and his film Fon.

    The wolf of whiteline

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 03/02/2017

» If you're a night owl and enjoy the chillaxed creative community of Silom (over Sukhumvit's), then for sure you've been to Whiteline and Safe Room a few times. Opened for two years now, this nightclub/alternative art venue has made a name for itself with standout events like the annual 60 Second Film Festival, which is coming around again in a week. We wanted to get to know the guy behind this cool hub, so we called up Oliver Wolfson and asked if he preferred cats or dogs — among other questions.

    The localised dane

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 09/12/2016

» If you've ever sourced any basic kitchenware from Central, you may own something of Scanproducts and not even know it. Established 20 years ago as a premium Danish homeware company in Thailand, Scanproducts has in recent years come out with local brand that is more relatable to this country's middle class homemakers. We had a chat with the company's founder, Danish fellow Jens Viggo Bergsoe, to learn more about "local brand by Scanproducts", the climate surrounding home décor in Thailand and a bit of his personal life, which only furthers the Scandinavian reputation for being model people.

» Do you ever just wonder what filmmakers or film critics watch to unwind? Or what was the movie that did wonders for them? Are they all going to be so esoteric, or do some of them love the same stupid films we do? We decided to find out by calling up a variety of local influencers in the industry -- some godly, others up-and-coming but interesting -- and inviting them to speak candidly about films. See which of the following film experts and rookies you could hypothetically have a movie date with, based on their answers to 10 questions.

    The Rustic Man

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 01/07/2016

» We all have that friend, colleague, family member or beau perhaps who seems to wear the exact same thing day in and day out. (Or maybe this is you!) Whether you approve of his monotony of style or not, you have to admit that his outfits make the most out of practicality, probably sit on that coveted cusp of appropriate and hella comfortable and, most importantly, are integral to his presence. Let's not try to change what's already perfect, people, but offer our "shirt and jeans" kinda guy discreet options for a wardrobe update onlookers may not notice but he certainly will. After all, that's all that really matters.

    Through the Cracker Box

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 20/05/2016

» Nova Contemporary Gallery's inaugural exhibition, "Today is the Day: The Proposition of our Future", is a poignant exposition on the aftermath of Fukushima, told collectively through the multimedia works of 10 artists. Renowned Japanese film artist Ryusuke Ito is among the batch of voices and contributes to the collection an evocative installation you'd need to appreciate for a few minutes from multiple angles. Originally titled "All Things Considered", Ito's piece is a video installation capturing a replica of the Fukushima Daiichi power plant's interior as well as the inside of a Japanese person's apartment -- seemingly tranquil, but in reality, narrative of livelihoods arrested by disaster.

» The Prudential Eye Awards, a prestigious art competition celebrating Asia's up-and-coming contemporary artists, returns for its third year, and we can't help but notice three Thai names on the shortlist (because who doesn't notice Thai names?). So, we've asked Tawan Wattuya, Sutthirat Supaparinya and Anupong Charoenmitr to give us a little show-and-tell about their pieces.
