    Don't go off the rails

    News, Postbag, Published on 30/06/2016

» If the government and State Railway of Thailand wish to go ahead with the high-speed train projects, may they review the existing investment plan, the administration of safety, and an effective business strategy to come up with the break-even point or turn to profit.

    A taxing argument

    News, Postbag, Published on 24/03/2019

» A reader in his March 23 letter makes a fair comment on two-tiered pricing for foreigners. But he then goes on to quantify the government's policy of a two-tiered charging system by saying that some farang do not pay taxes. I would dispute this. I am assuming by "some farang" he means tourists, as all foreigners living and working here pay tax in one form or another.

» Re: "Thamanat wins PM's backing", (BP, Sept 11). As a reformist, Prime Minister Pra-yut Chan-o-cha should quickly verify Deputy Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Capt Thamanat Prompow's claims that he didn't (a) plead guilty to charges of drug trafficking in Australia and (b) didn't serve a four-year jail sentence for his crime, thus disqualifying him from office.

It seemed a good idea at the time

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 27/11/2022

» The annual elephant festival in Surin attracted more than the usual attention last week after featuring an attempt to enter the hallowed Guinness Book of Records. News, Postbag, Published on 08/07/2017

» I'm glad that PM Prayut Chan-o-cha is reforming the police at long last, but he shouldn't reinvent the wheel. In 2006, then-prime minister Gen Surayud Chulanont, former army chief and member of our beloved King Rama IX's Privy Council, appointed retired Pol Gen Vasit Dejkunjorn, former chief of police, to head a distinguished commission for this very purpose.

Fond memories of Brazil's coffee culture

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 07/08/2016

» With the Rio Olympics finally under way, I can't get out of my head the old Frank Sinatra song that starts: "Way down among Brazilians/Coffee beans grow by the billions …" It was entitled The Coffee Song and a big hit when I was a kid back in the Stone Age. In fact, that song just about summed up my knowledge of Brazil in those days.

Well, after that things can only get better

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 27/12/2020

» What a dreadful year. We found ourselves having to tackle a whole new vocabulary and most of the words were enough to make even the most optimistic among us depressed. It all began in March with "self-isolation", a horrible expression inferring you have become a hermit, hidden away, exiled, incommunicado, which in fact is exactly what we were.
