Magnifying glasses in hand, they quickly deduced that the three bearded men holding a Kalashnikov in one hand and a photo of Thaksin Shinawatra in the other were not real al-Qaeda assassins, as they claimed to be in a YouTube clip.

The waking life of the pretty CIA agent played by Jessica Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty is spent obsessing over one thing and nothing else: hunting down that bearded piece of work dubbed by military-speak as "UBL". Usama Bin Laden is Maya's Holy Grail, her lifetime achievement, her addiction, her soulmate. If Maya were an actress, the terrorist would be her Oscar. And given that we all know what happened 20 months ago in that house in Pakistan _ the UBL assassination is re-enacted here with the thrilling, goggle-eyed, sometimes first-person video-game aesthetics _ history and headlines have already put on the spoiler alert for the world audience: Maya wins, big time. She's got her metaphorical Oscar, and fittingly, she's shocked and awed and even breaks down after the trophy (the corpse) has been brought to her.

Two religious wrongs

» It is all the sadder when the cause of a conflict - the embassy-torching, slogan-chanting, convulsive protests, mass rallies and shocking murders - isn't even worth the label of a movie, or an "expression". It's garbage, for a start, in the garb of juvenility. It's hate speech, released to the world in the form of visual claptrap, oblivious of its own imbecility. Innocence of Muslims, or at least the 14-minute trailer of the junk that sparked the overreaction of protesters, is not just an insult to a religion. Worse, it's an insult to cinema. The Lumiere brothers would be turning in their graves.
