» Thailand is now seeing a steady decline in the number of new coronavirus-infected cases nationwide. Easing lockdown in Bangkok and the provinces is being considered by government leaders. But if there is one thing we have learned from the months-long pandemic that has put many aspects of the country to a complete stop, it is that of the generosity of people who are willing to help the less privileged in a time of crisis. Here, we put together two examples of acts of kindness to assist the Myanmar migrant workforce and medical personnel.

» For the last decade Hussein, a lanky Muslim Rohingya, has been breaking his Ramadan fast -- or iftar -- at the century-old Jami-ul-Islam Mosque in Soi Ramkhamhaeng 53. For Hussein, the mosque on this busy eastern neighbourhood of Bangkok is more than just a house of worship; it has become his second home, especially during Ramadan, the fasting month when family usually gathers round at sunset to eat the first meal together. Hussein, 27 and a father of one, misses his parents and relatives who continue to reside in refugee camps in Bangladesh.

» Since the beginning of January much of southern Thailand has been swamped by heavy rain, causing massive flooding in several provinces. Besides human and animal casualties, infrastructure in many areas has taken a beating, slowing the process needed to assist flood victims in hard-to-access areas.

Collecting and studying historical information through interviews with Muslim and non-Muslim communities in the three restive southern provinces of Thailand, for instance, can help officials in charge of reconciliation better understand the issues residents are facing. And So ought to know, because the 33-year-old heads the Cham Oral History Project at the Documentation Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam).
