    Amari anew

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 31/01/2020

» Amari Pattaya, which underwent major renovations last year, now offers the new Amari Suites and original-but-fully-rejuvenated Amari Tower. It immediately gives guests a sense of arrival with its vast and spacious lobby at Amari Tower. The receptionists work with their backs to a huge and beautiful wall panel created by Italian artist Alex Turco. It shows different shades of blue, fitting to Amari Pattaya's beachside location. Look above and you'll see a very long rattan chandelier that resembles the clouds. Living up to its family-friendly status, a counter is dedicated to a children's check-in. Yep, you read that right. A young guest who's below the age of 12 can "check-in" and receive vouchers and small gifts. Gimmicky, definitely yes. But it should make the kids feel special and welcome. And who wouldn't like that?

» You'll feel like a VIP upon your arrival at Cape Dara Resort, Pattaya. Not only guests are referred to by the hospitable staff as khun than (a politer form of khun) but also be treated to other perks during their stay. If you stay in a suite and higher type, you'll be greeted by a GRO, that is guest relations officer, who will accompany you to the 37th floor where Dara Club Lounge is located. You should definitely be spending a lot of time there during your stay as you can reap many benefits from it. But before I go into detail on VIP treatments, let's talk overall impression of Cape Dara first.

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 28/08/2015

» Lunch doesn’t have to mean quick stop at noodle shophouse, the same old offerings at your office canteen or eating at your desk (and inviting ants to be your new colleagues in the process). Even if you’re not an office worker, you deserve a proper afternoon break -- and the occasional two-hour lunch every now and then never hurt anybody. So why not elevate your lunch experience to a new level? This week, we scan the city for places where you can raise your lunch game.

    Egyptian excavation

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 14/02/2014

» THE SET-UP: Like a sore thumb that has been dipped in 18k gold, covered in gemstones and wrapped in linen cloth, Tut’s Cafe stands out from its neighbouring eateries on the third floor of Paradise Park. On first glance, you probably can’t decide whether the place is a museum, a jewellery store or a cafe and the answer is actually all of the aforementioned. Showy opulence is in the air here (which may feel gaudy to some). First, your red carpet walk is flanked by clear obelisks that display statues and golden pens inside. You then may ogle the reproductions of real jewellery pieces found in museums before you plop onto one of the velvety wing chairs next to a coffee table with a marble top and golden legs, waiting to be waited on. The patrons here are mostly Asian tourists and Thais.

    Strangebook

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 19/07/2013

» The usage of Facebook in Thailand is getting stranger by the minute, it seems. Besides posting pictures of unfortunate people asking for "likes" to show "support", or scared entities promising auspiciousness to followers, some individuals have set up Facebook pages to promote things you wouldn’t think merit a Facebook following. We’ve selected 10 such pages in case you want to grow up one day and become a page administrator to promote something niche like your collection of belly-button lint (or dandruff collecting). Go ahead since you’ll probably find more followers than you think, like these strange Facebook pages.

    DIY sticker art

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 19/07/2013

» With a bachelor's degree in Art Education from Chulalongkorn University, 34-year-old Rukkit "Gift" Kwanhawan is a graphic artist whose works can be seen both on the streets and in galleries. His distinctive renditions of animals with the use of the "block stencil" technique has earned him an elevated place in the Thai art scene. He recently contributed his works to various art projects and events such as "Do You Read Me?", "Bukruk" and "Unspoken Dialogue". His designs have also been commissioned on products of local bag maker URFACE and French clothing brand Mamama. Gift's latest project, "Tikkur", is named from an informal way to say sticker in Thai and is also his name spelt backwards. It allows people to create their own image with stickers that come in different shapes and patterns. You can buy a Tikkur pack at Sneaka Villa* in Siam Square Soi 2 (089-168-6336), Superrzaaap in Terminal 21 (02-108-0573), DESIGNITI & The FEDeration in Beacon Zone of CentralWorld and BKK Graff store in Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC). Go to facebook.com/Tikkur for more information.
