Force-fed film belongs deep in dark vaults

News, Kong Rithdee, Published on 13/12/2014

» Strange things have happened at the cinemas. First, Hitler showed up in a Thai short film sponsored by the government (meaning by taxpayers), the radioactive gatecrasher into a party of virtuous citizens. Second, another Thai film featuring, among other things, a joke about the anal cleft — it's funny as long as it's not your anal cleft — is raking in a huge amount of money at the multiplexes, likely surpassing the 100-million-baht mark as you're reading this, which is after just four days of release. Cinema enlightens, even in the dark forest of swastikas and bodily bergschrunds.

Southern attacks are terror by any definition

    News, Published on 09/12/2012

» The statement on Thursday by Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yabamrung that there is no terrorism in Thailand is nothing short of bizarre. Mr Chalerm was responding to a report released last week by the Australian Institute for Economics and Peace that ranked Thailand eighth in a global list of 158 countries where terrorism has had the most impact over the past decade. The index takes into account the number of terrorist incidents, fatalities, injuries and damage, and says an astounding 5% of global terrorist incidents from 2002 to 2009 occurred in Thailand. Pakistan, India and Afghanistan accounted for 12%, 11% and 10% respectively.

News, Umesh Pandey, Published on 28/05/2017

» Sitting in what is considered to be the heart of Asian democracy, India, the thought of how we Thais have come to live with the threats of military leaders when it comes to the return of democracy makes me wonder how and why have we become so timid.

Special power not needed for the South

News, Anucha Charoenpo, Published on 13/03/2017

» The call by a Buddhist network in the deep South for the prime minister to use his special Section 44 power to deal with the insurgency is sending an important signal to the authorities: they are losing hope, confidence and belief in the peace process and the efforts to tackle the violence.
