» The Tabebuia rosea, or chompoo panthip, on Kasetsart University's Kamphaeng Saen campus in Nakhon Pathom province caused a traffic jam as it attracted people from far and near last February. The trees were planted on both sides of the road and when they dropped all their leaves, only to be blanketed by flowers all at the same time, they were a sight to behold.

Leisurely look at nature

» My family has made it a tradition to travel together, either to our country home near Loei or to my daughter Nalinee’s workplace in Phuket, at least once a year. It is our way of spending quality time together. Even when we are driving to her place, Nalinee flies into Bangkok to join us for the trip. Driving 900km to Cape Panwa in Phuket is not everybody’s idea of fun, but it was not as bad as it sounds as we made stops along the way when we went there during the long Songkran holiday recently.

Bangkok's boiling streets not best for bird's nest ferns

» It's Songkran, the Thai New Year, marked by Buddhist ceremonies and an exodus of people going back to their home provinces to be with their relatives and loved ones. The exodus began on Thursday so Bangkok's usually busy streets are now almost empty of traffic. But if you go out on an errand today expect to be drenched with water, as it has become a tradition for playful people to splash water on passers-by or on one another as part of the merriment. In the provinces especially, pick-ups ply the streets loaded with drums filled with water and youngsters on a water splashing spree, all in the name of fun.

Family's roots grow strong on farm

» Our farm is small, but it is the only place where my whole family can indulge in our favourite activity, gardening, to our hearts' desire. It is a seven-hour drive from Bangkok or six if we don't stop for petrol and lunch or dinner, but we take every chance we can to go there and the long Songkran weekend was no exception. Once there, I immerse myself in my own world, forgetting everything but the people I hold near and dear to my heart, as I spend most of the day and put all my energy into repotting and propagating bromeliads, and planting shrubs and trees.
