    Thailand's semi-democracy returns

Oped, Thitinan Pongsudhirak, Published on 01/12/2023

» The appointment of Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha as privy councillor has neatly bookended Thai politics over the past decade. It coincides with the 10-year anniversary of the street demonstrations that were led by the People's Democratic Reform Committee, paving the way for Gen Prayut to stage a military coup in May 2014. While the interim was a period of hard and soft military-authoritarian rule in 2014-19 and 2019-23, the new moving balance in Thai politics is a semi-democracy of sorts under the Pheu Thai Party-led coalition government.

Songs for life as it's no longer lived

Life, Thana Boonlert, Published on 17/04/2023

» Ad Carabao's new song Prachathipatung revives the myth of vote-buying and ignorance in rural society. The title is a coinage blending prachathipatai (democracy) and tung (money). On the track, parents ask children to return to their home village to vote for local politicians who give them money. It puts into song from the political discourse of an urban middle class that expresses disdain for villagers along with antipathy for one type of money politics as well as full-fledged democracy.

    PM still at crossroads

    Oped, Editorial, Published on 01/10/2022

» Like it or not, the Constitutional Court's ruling yesterday gives society much-needed clarity. After a month of debates and rumours, the ruling clearly spells out that PM Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha's term started on April 6, 2017, which was the date the present charter was promulgated, and his previous leadership under the junta government did not apply under this constitution.

» Everyone and their mother are well aware that floods suck, period. But give it to the Thais who manage to make the most of the rains as shown in these pictures, which I hope will lighten up the heavy rain (with no intention to glamourise it).
