Reopening act

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 05/06/2020

» The time has come: people are getting out of their houses because places are starting to reopen. Is it a good thing or a bad thing? It depends on how you look at it. It's great that the butt indent on our couches is getting a relief, but then again, people overcrowding places like Ikea is the downside. They probably all rushed there to replace their sofas. Nevertheless, a number of places have reopened, which means you have stuff to do and places to see other than going to the supermarket for groceries. If you've been dying to get out of the house, these places offer a respite.

    A summer of fun

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 05/04/2019

» Summer is here -- like that's not at all obvious. As the heat bears down on all of us Bangkokians, the temptation to simply spend these hellish days locked up in our rooms with the AC turned high (or is it low? You get what I mean) while we cuddle in our blankets and binge hours and hours on end of Netflix shows is strong. But that doesn't have to be the case. There's still a bunch of enjoyable things to do around the city despite the heat. In fact, they're not only fun, but they're perfect things to during the summer time. So stop being a lazy bum, get off that couch and outta the house, and don't worry, you can still have your ice cream. Here's a few summer activities to get you up and going during this heatwave.

    Street and savoury

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 04/08/2017

» The setting: After being dubbed the world's street food capital for two years in a row by CNN, it seemed only proper that the first Michelin-starred street food restaurant, Hawker Chan, opened its doors to Bangkokians almost a month ago. Hailing from Singapore, this is the restaurant's second venture out of its home country, the first being Taiwan. The restaurant has opened in a pretty accessible location on the fifth floor of Terminal 21. Much like its original Singaporean location, it's not a stranger to long queues, but customer flow has definitely improved since they opened. Still, don't be surprised if all their tables are full during lunch and dinner, especially on weekends.

    Sizzling tales

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 24/03/2017

» The summer's heat can make us do some ridiculous things. Just recently, a French woman was found running around naked near Khaosan road, complaining it was too hot. Granted, authorities said she was mentally ill, but admittedly, we know exactly how she feels. Although we would never run around butt-naked through Bangkok's streets, we've had our fair share of ridiculousness when it comes to the Thai summer. We've gone to great lengths to relieve ourselves from the heat and had some pretty unforgettable moments in the process. This week, we decided to ask you to share your experiences with us. You certainly didn't disappoint.

    Songkran summertime

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 09/04/2021

» Summer is here and Songkran is around the corner so get your water guns ready because Bangkok is about to become an all-out water war zone! Wait, no water battles? For two consecutive years? Sadly, Songkran hasn't been the same since Rona came around and it seems like we have to wait yet another year to -- hopefully -- celebrate Songkran in the wet and wild way we're familiar with. But that doesn't mean your summer has to be a bummer or that Songkran has to be spent cooped up at home -- though we know it's certainly tempting since it's getting too dang hot outside. Here are some things you can do this Songkran summertime besides being sad that water fights aren't a thing again this year.

    The other WFH

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 29/01/2021

» The light at the end of the proverbial tunnel seems to grow brighter and brighter each day as Covid cases begin to somewhat falter and vaccinations are set to soon begin. But as we look forward to the day when we can finally and truly put all of this behind us, we're not entirely out of the woods yet. That means we're still facing a few more days of enduring working from home just to be safe. That might be great news for some, but for others who are sick of the same desk, same chair and same four walls, fear not. If you're looking for a change of work scenery, these hotels in Bangkok and nearby provinces are offering their rooms so you can WFH or "Work From Hotel".

    Eat, sleep, repeat

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 25/09/2020

» With tourism at an all-time low in a country that relies heavily on tourism, the government is scrambling to soften the blow on the economy. Hotels have taken it pretty hard, with a few reopening but still operating at low to medium capacity. However, there are hotels that have come up with a plan to entice spending at their properties: dine and stay promotions. It's pretty straightforward: you spend a certain amount to feast and eat your fill, and then you're awarded with a free stay or a discount on your next booking. Eat and be rewarded for it. Loosen those belts and throw diet rules out the window, as we list the hotels that are offering dine and stay promos.

    Secret services

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 28/02/2020

» Bangkok is rapidly becoming a city with innovations that make life much easier. Yes, we at Guru have complained a lot about the city's many negative aspects but we also can't deny that the city has improved. Is there room for improvement? Oh, definitely. But there are many things that we use right now that we simply cannot imagine life without. What would life be without the services of GrabFood to deliver meals to your door or Shopee and Lazada to do your shopping from the comfort of your home? How about the Lock Box storage facilities we see in many BTS and MRT stations that help tourists roam without having to drag their luggage with them? Can we forget about the lifesaving GrabTaxi and GrabBike services? There are more services on the rise that you may not know about and that's what we're here to spotlight this week.

    Crazy little thing called love

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 14/02/2020

» Happy St Valentine's Day to all celebrating and to those who aren't (you're not really alone with Big Brother watching, are you?). While we'll see a lot of mushy-gushy posts in the next 24 hours and our social media feed flooded by pictures of ladies with chocolates and roses or guys clad in suits ready for dinner dates, there have been plenty of love stories in Thailand that are pretty dang insane. Some are quirky, some are funny, some show the great lengths that people will go for the ones they love. Whatever the case, these are all stories worthy to commemorate St Valentine's Day.
