    » How much should Channel 3 pay for its 10-year concession extension? Half a billion baht? One billion? How about something along the lines of a trillion and a half? Broadcasting and telecommunications are converging in more ways than one and perhaps Thailand should rethink whether it actually needs a spectrum-hogging UHF broadcaster in this day and age, and if the resources could be put to better use elsewhere.

    Completely in the dark

    » The prime minister's TV show is called Having Confidence in Thailand but no one has much confidence in NBT Channel 11, the slavishly pro-government station; someone forced the station off the air for nine minutes just after the beginning of the Sunday morning show, and technical "experts" were in the dark about it, no pun intended; Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva was just starting to explain his latest policy towards the red-shirt protesters when the screen went blank from what National Broadcasting Services of Thailand director Rattana Charonesak said was a stronger signal transmitted over the Channel 11 one; she admitted that she was completely in the dark about the incident, no pun intended.

    ToT opposes allocation act

    » Your ToT said that the Frequency Allocation Act under scrutiny by the senate will cause the loss of 10 billion baht for state coffers if it actually passes; Monchai Noosong, senior executive ToT president for vice, said your ToT and your CAT will lose their duopoly status to something called the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC); that will mean that ToT and CAT can't give concessions to private firms, and that means that the whole business of concession fees will go in someone else's pocket or, worse still, no one's pocket at all; of course your ToT has nothing to lose here, it is only intensely and altruistically concerned with the harm to the national coffers.
