Anonymous commented : Lawrence, Depending on your age, there are many ways to meet smart, successful girls.Gyms, yoga, work, study, through mutual friends, starbucks( many friends have met this way). I would tend to not look in bars, nightclubs or internet chat rooms. Just get yourself out and about, look what's out there and just take your time. Be their friend first and don't just think sex, sex, sex. Another great place is malls, but takes a lot of courage and sometimes you may come off as sleazy. Cheers

DKO commented : Regretfully a favourite trick gaining ground where I live with clothes stalls in one new mall (no doubt occurs everywhere) is when my wife asks how much an item of clothing is before she asks if she can try it on. She is told the price and if acceptable asks to try it on. Increasingly, she is then told "You can buy but you are not allowed to try it on first". Crazy this, as we immediately assume they know something poor about the fit (whether that is the case or not) The other thing we are NOW finding [u:sq8gktop]which we BOTH hate[/u:sq8gktop] is; AFTER trying on an item and offering the asking price, we are told that is the wholesale price and only applicable if 2 of the same item are bought by us. When my wife says she only wants one, the original asking price is hiked some 30% to 50% and the sales assistant will not budge from that new price. I have no idea if there is a "husband is Farang" factor here and they think we will accept the hike, or whether it is a deceptive tactic for all customers (be they Thai, Farang or foreign) for getting the customer "sold" on the item and then change the price. My wife hates this, as much as do I, and no matter how much she likes the item she ALWAYS, off her own bat without even telling me what has happened, walks away glaring contemptuously at the assistant as she does. I have suggested to my wife that when we are at the new mall that as this deceptive practise is getting more common, my wife asks the price for ONE item in future before she tries it on. The sales assistants may still lie (lying is what they are doing with their deliberate deception) but it also lets them know "we know the game and we ain't playing". The honest stall keepers will not be offended as I am sure they know the games some others are now playing. Hopefully, those who think they are clever with this sales tactic will lose future customers and fail. Customers are bound to increasingly aware of which stalls uses these dubious sales methods as as there are now some 300 stalls and more being added all the time there are "plenty more fish in the sea".

Jay commented : a karaoke club, or in Fortune Mall, but not often. I find that, compared to most other places to which I travel - like Hong Kong, the Philippines, or even most places in the U.S., Thailand is safer and more friendly, and I don't have to be as vigilant protecting myself. Tourists bring a lot more to Thailand, in my opinion, than just the money they spend. Yes, it's true that you have thousands of middle aged men, often with not a lot of money, coming to Thailand to visit the go-go clubs and beer bars. Except for providing work for thousands of girls from the provinces, they don't help the economy all that much. But most tourists are not in that category. Most tourists who come to Thailand discover a subtle and interesting new (for them) culture, and leave this country with a new understanding. That translates, more often than you think, into business activity later on. If you look at all the international businesses that have been established in Thailand (excluding the retail businesses), you will be surprised to find that probably half of them had their start with a business executive vacationing in Thailand, and having their eyes opened to the potential of this great country. Sure, not every tourist starts a factory later. But if one in a thousand does, that translates into many thousands of new manufacturing jobs in Thailand every year.

corky commented : I have just returned from the Mall where I bought 4 pens from the stationary section of the department store. I was the one who handed the pens to the lady at the cash register and asked her how much. But she totally ignored me and started talking to my wife. She didn't even look at me. It was as though I was invisible. At least she gave me the change. A while ago we were going to go to MK in the Mall as we approach (I was in front of my wife) the lady looked straight at my wife and gave her a smile and Wai etc and totally ignored me, didn't even look at me or acknowledge that I was there. I just kept on walking,as I was in front position, and left my wife talking to the lady. I have explained to my wife how rude this is to a westerner and she now leaves me alone when I approach the girls at the cash register at all opportunities. Does this happen to other people here? It doesn't happen in tourist spots like sukhumvit, khao san road etc. It only happens in Thai areas?[/quote:366axwfz] not invisible, they certainly do like staring dont they, but they find us awkward. and speaking thai is not the end of the problem. my friend is phillipine and speaks no thai, i do fluently and they converse with me but look at him...... its sometimes funny sometimes sad but always weird.

Jason McDonald commented : I think Western fast food is rubbish. If you look around the malls you will see young Thai girls getting larger and fatter just like their western counterparts. I put this down to western fast foods. But Thai fast food in the streets is not good for you either. Most of the meat is 60% fat and how fresh is it. What do you expect for 20 to 25 baht. Bot Thai and western fast foods have far too much salt, sugar, and added chemicals. Does anyone know if western food served in Thailand has MSG added to it? But I do like fast food western and Thai. The difference is in the west the fat and meat are ground together so you can't tell that there is any fat; in the Thai case the fat is not hidden and can be clearly seen, but people eat it anyway.

An ode to the service industry
Brunch, Andrew Biggs, Published on 10/01/2010
» This is a column for my Thai readers only. That's because I want to teach them a lesson about their service staff. I want to make a complaint and I want Thais to sit up and take notice. Simply put ... what on earth has happened to good ol' service these days? I'm talking about restaurants.

Are the foreigners finding a sense of peace in Issarn?

» Dear FOS, I quite agree with you. I-Saan can still be a very charming place, even for me, I do see two different faces of I-Saan. The country side with its villages and the big metropolitan areas. I grow up in a little village with some 500 inhabitants myself. In our village there were more cows,...
Are Farang invisible to Thai?
By Jason McDonald, Created on: 21/06/2009, Last updated on: 15/12/2010
» I ask this to find out if farang are really invisible to Thai. This has happened to me many times and I was wondering if it happens to other Westerners who live in Thai areas of Bangkok (or maybe elsewhere). When I am out with my Thai wife, especially shopping, I find that, Thai people refuse to...
Western fast food
By Pranot, Created on: 02/07/2009, Last updated on: 29/07/2009
» Today Western fast food is popular because there are many branches of this food everywhere and it is comfortable to buy and eat them. In my opinion, we should not buy Western fast food for three reasons: First, Western fast food is expensive. It has less quantity because a raw material in production...
