When it twigged Thailand was different

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 17/04/2022

» For the third year running we have experienced muted Songkran celebrations, and I for one won't complain if it remains that way for a while. Of course there have been a few naughty tourists who have broken the water-throwing protocols, but maybe the heat got to them.

    Fifty fascinating years in Wonderland

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 14/04/2019

» Having first arrived in Thailand a few days before Songkran, each year the festival approaches it sparks memories of those early days in the Kingdom. This year is slightly more significant because earlier this week marked my 50th year in Thailand, or to put it another way, roughly 18,250 days. That sounds decidedly scary. The frightening thing is that I can remember those early days better than the events of last week. The immature youth is now an immature wrinkly.

A soggy serving of mush to start the day

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 23/04/2017

» Most important news of the week is that the Chinese have given the thumbs down to a revered English breakfast staple ... Weetabix. The Chinese owner of Weetabix has sold the cereal company to an American firm after four years of failing to convince the domestic market of its virtues. It seems Chinese consumers still prefer the traditional dim sum (steamed buns) and rice porridge for their morning repast rather than the cereal The Guardian newspaper splendidly called "a gloriously bland, comforting, soggy serving of mush".

Home in the garden of earthly delights

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 23/08/2015

» Considering the tragic events at the Erawan Shrine last Monday, it seems inappropriate to write anything too frivolous in this week’s column. Most of us are in a state of shock.

It's hard to beat a munchy, crunchy Thai bug

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 05/10/2014

» The most important news of the week is that Thailand is now the world's largest producer of edible insects, with 20,000 insect farms operating in the kingdom. On occasions my bedroom feels like one of the farms, with assorted weird UFOs buzzing around.

    Setting the scene for summer

Life, Usnisa Sukhsvasti, Published on 17/03/2014

» When the golden shower trees and the yellow and pink trumpet trees start to flower profusely, you know summer is coming in Thailand. They can be considered the Thai version of Japan’s cherry blossoms, the only difference being that there is nowhere in Bangkok where they grow together in a floral landscape worthy of selfie indulgence.

Saudi rejection of Thai maids blessing in disguise

    Veera Prateepchaikul, Published on 13/03/2013

» Thankfully, Saudi Arabia’s interior ministry has rejected a request by the country's own labour ministry to lift the ban on the recruitment of Thai maids - after other countries cut off the supply because of the high level of abuse.

The festival that never seems to end

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 15/04/2012

» Songkran appears to have been going on for even longer than usual this year. There's an awful lot of city folks who disappeared a week ago for a ''long weekend'' and haven't been seen since. They probably won't be spotted again until the end of the week, which no doubt will be just in time for another long weekend.
