    The 2021 Guru awards

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 24/12/2021

» As the year comes to a close and we're all looking back at the past 12 months with introspection, at Guru we will stick to time-honoured tradition of being reflectively snarky. Like any other year, 2021 had no shortage of cringe-worthy and WTF moments. So before we head into the new year with resolutions we'll give up on halfway through the first month of 2022, let's roll out the metaphorical red carpet as we award moments from the eventful year. It's time for this year's edition of the Guru Awards.

» 2021 is finally here and we can finally put "The Year That Must Not Be Named" behind us! Though we're not entirely out of the woods yet, the fact remains that a new year means we can turn a new leaf and look forward to the things yet to come this year. Here is a list of things that are in store for us, which hopefully -- fingers crossed -- may actually take place this year.

    On a liquid diet

» Unless you're really health-conscious, on a cleanse or you're watching your weight, vegetable juices probably aren't your drink of choice. After all, they're not necessarily appetising. The taste of most vegetable juices take getting used to and after making numerous faces because of the odd tastes, you may start enjoying them. However, that's not the case for Paak. In fact, they may be the reason you start drinking vegetable beverages on a regular basis.

    Welcoming a new decade!

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 03/01/2020

» For those of you who may have missed it, we are in a new decade. Yes, you read that right. No, you are not hallucinating. Yes, we are all old. Welcome to the beginning of the 2020s where films like Back To The Future and Blade Runner are not just classics but the future worlds depicted in them are now effectively in the past; where years like 2050 and 2060 no longer sound ridiculous like they did back in the early 2000s and where those born in 2000 are 20 years old. It's a lot to take in, that's for sure. With every new year also comes the declarations of "New year, new me" posted all over social media and vocally announced at dinner tables everywhere. Resolutions are made and kept for a good two weeks or so before being thrown out the window. So instead of trying to expect things to happen that we aren't even sure will happen, let's take a look at the stuff that we're fairly certain will happen this year. Here's a couple of things to look forward to this 2020.

    Easy living

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 16/08/2019

» Living in Bangkok has its share of ups and downs. Then again, what city doesn't? We know we complain about living in the city in every issue we publish (we have plenty more) but that doesn't mean there are people who share the same grievances, but unlike us who just whine, have decided to do something about it. Sure, there are plenty of things to be improved upon or done away within Bangkok and we're pretty sure we all can write a long list. But we're sincerely glad to see that there are services like these that make not just living in Bangkok a little easier, but also living a greener, more-eco friendly life in the city more viable. And who's going to refuse a greener and easier lifestyle? Here are a few services to try out.

    It's a party alright

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 15/06/2018

» The Firm is a few metres down Sukhumvit 33, a short walk from BTS Phrom Phong and at first glance looks like a nightclub. It is a nightclub, but it's also one of the very few restaurants in Bangkok that serve food 24/7. Yes, you read that right: the kitchen doesn't stop and dishes out food around the clock. The first and second floors are dining areas while the third to fifth floors are where you can dance the night away. Most of the time, nightclub-goers fill the dining area before heading home. Don't get us wrong, The Firm isn't just for late night/early morning, post-party people. You can definitely head over for breakfast, lunch or dinner because what they've got to offer is a feast at any time of day or night.

    Let's get high

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 03/03/2017

» Many restaurants aspire to give their patrons an elevated dining experience, and in some cases, this has been taken literally. Bangkok is home to a vast array of rooftop restaurants and bars, some of which are well-known, go-to places for a dinner with a magnificent view of the city's skyline. This week, we have rounded up a number of relatively new rooftop restos for you to check out and enjoy. Protip: don't look down. Seriously.

    Guardians of the Galaxy

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 20/10/2017

» Three years after the original was released, Destiny 2 finally hit shelves after much excitement. Bungie's mythic sci-fi FPS (that's "first-person shooter" for you noobs) stays true to its roots in being chock-filled with multiplayer features and making you obsessed with making sure your character's power level reaches high numbers by getting the rarest and most powerful loot through quests and public events. Of course, there's also the campaign for you to play through, but is this going to be another case of "expansion overload" like the first game? Does Destiny 2's multiplayer features make you want to play it over and over again, even if you're done with the story? Basically, the real question is: "Is this worth my money?"

    The best of Comic-Con 2017

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 04/08/2017

» Every year, the city of San Diego is the host to thousands upon thousands of geeks and nerds that converge for one reason and one reason only: the San Diego Comic-Con. Arguably the Con of all Cons, SDCC is nothing short of geek heaven and has become the place to make major announcements, whether it be movies or TV shows, that send the hallowed walls of Hall H trembling with the screams and squeals of fanboys and fangirls contained therein. This year's Comic-Con certainly didn't disappoint. Here's some of the biggest things that came out of SDCC 2017 and here's to hoping we have a Con that's at least half as good as SDCC here in Bangkok.
