A grim year rescued by Paddington Bear

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 25/12/2022

» It is customary at this time of the year to take a not-too-serious look back at the events of the past 12 months. It is not that easy because it's been a pretty miserable year highlighted by the madness of the war in Ukraine.

Nothing wrong with snoozing in Snoring

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 01/08/2021

» One of the first things a visitor to Thailand is asked is probably what town they come from back home. My response of Reading invariably brings blank looks, so I usually add "just west of London" which admittedly doesn't make things any clearer. It would be nice if I came from a place that sounded a trifle more intriguing, such as the wonderful Nempnett Thrubwell in Somerset or Booby Dingle in Herefordshire.

It could be fun, in a strange sort of way

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 10/01/2021

» A number of readers -- well, three -- have asked why last week's column did not contain the usual predictions for the coming year. My feeling at the time was that with the dark cloud of Covid-19 hovering over us it seemed a bit inappropriate to carry the usual frivolous PostScript predictions. However, I have had a change of heart and considering we are only 10 days into the New Year it is not too late to make silly forecasts.

No dodgy dealings today, thank you

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 06/09/2020

» Thailand marks its annual National Anti-Corruption Day today, which might possibly prompt a few wry smiles in certain quarters. Still, for 24 hours at least, we can be assured no one will be on the fiddle, or at least seen to be on the fiddle. No shady deals or siphoning of funds. No oiling of the wheels. It is indeed a time to rejoice.

A most entertaining war of words

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 14/07/2019

» An early frontrunner for word of the year could be "disinvited" which has featured in a series of not very diplomatic exchanges flying across The Pond this week.

We need to look after creepy-crawlies

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 17/02/2019

» There was a disturbing report this week that the world is running out of insects, primarily due to pesticide poisoning. Having just read an article in which a scientist warned "if insects were to disappear, the world would fall apart", I suspect this is not good news. However, the world already seems to be falling apart without any help from absent insects. Admittedly the declining insect population is difficult to appreciate in Thailand where it is hard to experience a day without an encounter with some kind of bug. In my small garden there are plenty of crawling things creeping about, ready to sneakily bite me at the first opportunity.

Creatures great and small, bless them all

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 02/09/2018

» At the end of this month Dusit Zoo, better known as Khao Din, is shutting its gates after 80 years. Its 1,300 residents are moving to temporary accommodation in six provincial zoos until their new home opens in Pathum Thani in another three years. Moving can be quite a traumatic experience for animals, and we wish them all well.

On learning to play your cards right

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 07/02/2016

» It was one of those stories that, shortly after you have commenced reading, you glance at the date at the top of the page just to make sure it isn’t April 1.

Betting on bugs can be bit of a gamble

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 25/10/2015

» The most important news last week was undoubtedly a dramatic police swoop on a beetle fight in the northern province of Phrae. The eagle-eyed cops were so pleased with this successful raid they even held a press conference in which they announced to crime reporters that they arrested three men, confiscated two beetles and seized the grand sum of 100 baht, allegedly used for gambling purposes.

Time for the elephant's hind legs defence?

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 29/01/2012

» The saga of the allegedly "unusually wealthy" civil servant and his missing millions of baht continues to ramble on in true Thai tradition. The gentleman in question at least finally appeared before the graft busters last week and proceeded to say absolutely nothing, which in his position is probably the best thing to say.
