    Plenty of cycling in 2016

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 31/12/2015

» After six months or so of closure, the revamped cycling track around Suvarnabhumi International Airport was officially reopened last Saturday. Renamed the "Sky Lane", this collaboration between the Airport of Thailand (AOT) and Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) has been greatly welcomed by Bangkok's cycling community. The return of this bike track to the short list of places where residents of the capital can train or enjoy leisurely rides without the risk of becoming roadkill is definitely one of this year's best bit of good news.

Like a bat out of hell

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 04/02/2016

» Life is full of surprises. Luckily, in my case, they are mostly pleasant. During my recent visit to Phitsanulok, which was my first to Noen Maprang, the province's recently revealed hidden gem, I was amazed time and time again.

    The Pride of Phayao

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 28/03/2019

» First-time visitors to the northern province of Phayao should be sure to check out the provincial town and, in particular, the famous namesake lake on which it stands. For repeat visitors, however, I suggest exploring the northeastern part of the province, which is made up of Chiang Kham, Phu Sang and Pong districts. Unless, you have plenty of time to spend , don't bother going back to the lake.

    Vietnam's up and coming destinations

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 14/03/2019

» Unlike Hanoi, Sapa, Danang, Hue, Hoi An, Dalat, Mui Ne and Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang (pronounced ya jang) is not a familiar name for Thai travellers. But with a direct air link between Bangkok and this Vietnamese city, recently introduced by Bangkok Airways and soon to be followed suit by another airline, that is about to change.

    Conquering new terrain

» Despite the fact that Hua Hin and Cha-am are in different provinces (the first is in Prachuap Khiri Khan and the latter in Phetchaburi) the coastal parts of these two adjacent districts are often considered by holiday makers as one and the same area. I visit these parts several times a year, not to enjoy the famous beaches though but for mountain biking. And now there's a good reason to go there more often.

Who dares wins in U Thong

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 10/03/2016

» Suphan Buri is definitely a superpower in Thailand's BMX scene. One of the major forces behind the success of the province's team is its coach and racer Chakkit Thong-on, aka Achan Daeng, who has won coveted Royal trophies in the Thailand National Championship series for BMX Racing and MTB Supercross events (30-year-old-up category) for five years in a row.

    Blazing a new trail

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 03/03/2016

» As long as the world continues to revolve, things will never stop changing, for the worse or for the better. The first time I visited Mo Hin Khao, the hill in Chaiyaphum province famous for groups of awe-inspiring boulders, it was kind of a remote site accessible only by a dirt track. That was in 2007, which was not that long ago. Recently, however, I returned there, only to find that the "natural site" now has a feel of a highway petrol station, minus the gas pumps.

Turning a corner on the cycle of acceptance

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 09/05/2013

» Cycling has become one of the fastest-growing trends in Thai society. These days, although the numbers here are still low compared to Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Bogota or other bicycle-friendly cities, bikes are now a pretty common sight on Bangkok streets, in sois, parks and other places including office buildings, condominiums and exhibition centres.
