» For a good part of November, the world was gripped by a tumultuous fanfare that is the US election. And even before the very last votes were counted, relief and joy were already felt in many communities, not only in America but perhaps across the world. For better or for worse, Donald Trump's reign is coming to an end, and the world now looks to President-elect Joe Biden in the hopes that his win will let voices from the marginalised LGBTI community become louder. Biden promised to enact the Equality Act, a civil rights law that will protect LGBTI people from discrimination within his first 100 days in office among other things.

» Being stuck at home for the summer is no joke. There is no beach, no water-splashing wars and no air-conditioned malls (for the most part) that can cool us down during this 30C-plus weather. Though we can always order ice cream to our doorstep to cool us down.

» When the news broke on Oct 13 last year that the much beloved King Bhumibol had died, the nation was in for the biggest heartbreak of our generation. People reacted with feverish emotion, with some bursting into tears and others beginning to pray. But National Artist Prof Emeritus Preecha Thaothong grabbed his brush and poured his grief onto canvas. He spent that entire night painting and, the next morning, ended up with a portrait of the revered monarch.

» In deep jungle, a forest ranger in his black uniform slowly climbed up a tree. With trained, quick hands, he strapped a camouflage case to a high branch that could oversee an area underneath it at a wide angle. Inside the case was a camera trap that can monitor the movement of animals, and especially humans who may enter the forest illegally.

» During this time when Bangkok is being hit with unseasonal rainstorms, one of the major concerns many have when commuting and walking through the streets is the long row of trees -- big, tall, green, and with their branches entangled in power lines. It's an embodiment of possible danger ready to strike down unsuspecting souls.

» The Thai LGBTI scene begins 2017 with news that the much-anticipated Bangkok Pride has now been postponed to the end of the year. Originally set for May, the country's first pride parade in 11 years has been pushed back out of respect for King Bhumibol's one-year mourning period. The wait goes on, unfortunately. So for now, we occupy ourselves with the daily mishaps and surprises happening around the world.
