    Frankly,my dear, I do give a dam

Life, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 20/04/2012

» I wish I never had to write another whining piece about dam construction. It was just a few months ago that I profusely lamented about the loss of lush teak forests _ and ecological balance _ in Phrae province if the government goes ahead with the controversial Kang Sua Ten Dam, by citing flood prevention as cause. After last year's massive flood, debate about article 112, dubious purchasing of tablets, constant meddling from finance minister Kittiratt Na Ranong and the recent threat or pledge _ you decide _ by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra that he will return home, we do not need another headache.

Water scarcity calls for nationwide change

News, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 03/10/2015

Only the capital is full of water

Life, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 13/10/2015

» People might accuse me of being drunk when I say it is time to launch a serious water-saving campaign for the next year. This is understandable because storms have been hitting the city for the last two weeks and the Bangkok skyline has been in a deep sea of greyish blue. The city has had more than enough water -- rain water, to be precise and people calling for a campaign to save water may be viewed as loopy.

Songkran will be a dry old argument

News, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 11/04/2016

» Are you ready for Songkran? I expect many revellers have already prepared colourful flower-pattern shirts to wear and talcum powder to apply on faces. The most important thing, though, are the water splashing devices, those ubiquitous guns or adapted water canons which I refer to as "Wasteful Water Mass Dispensers" (WMD).

Give hope to saviours of our forests

News, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 13/06/2016

» Without trees, the reddish earth made the mountain look eerie -- more like a mining site. Or Mars. That was my impression of the area I saw during a forest-planning trip to Nan province last year.

The man, his maps, and his people

News, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 17/10/2016

» The King rarely smiled -- that was the broad perception of many people about the late monarch, presumably gained from his appearance in news photos or video footage. "The King never smiles" is the perception of a Western writer who scripted a controversial book about him. But for millions of Thais, his solemn face did not matter. The presence of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, or even a thought about of him, brought smiles to their own faces.

It was organised by the Mekong River Commission (MRC), the only organisation that works directly with the governments of Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam to jointly manage the shared resources and sustainable development of the river.
