The best of Comic-Con 2017

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 04/08/2017

» Every year, the city of San Diego is the host to thousands upon thousands of geeks and nerds that converge for one reason and one reason only: the San Diego Comic-Con. Arguably the Con of all Cons, SDCC is nothing short of geek heaven and has become the place to make major announcements, whether it be movies or TV shows, that send the hallowed walls of Hall H trembling with the screams and squeals of fanboys and fangirls contained therein. This year's Comic-Con certainly didn't disappoint. Here's some of the biggest things that came out of SDCC 2017 and here's to hoping we have a Con that's at least half as good as SDCC here in Bangkok.

» 2021 is finally here and we can finally put "The Year That Must Not Be Named" behind us! Though we're not entirely out of the woods yet, the fact remains that a new year means we can turn a new leaf and look forward to the things yet to come this year. Here is a list of things that are in store for us, which hopefully -- fingers crossed -- may actually take place this year.

Couch surfing

» Most of us dream of walking down the aisle -- the airplane one -- and the awkwardness that comes with trying to find your seat while avoiding people putting their bags in the overhead bins.

Future forward

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 31/12/2021

» Today is the last day of 2021 and depending on when you’re reading this, you may only have a few more hours or even just minutes to say goodbye to the year that’s basically been a repetition of 2020. There have been a number of ups and downs as we went through another lockdown and reopening, but the good news is that we made it: we’re still here and still trudging along, though some of us would really like to get a breather from all the craziness.

» Those who don’t know who John Cleese is are missing a lot of laughs in their lives. The legendary British comedian’s career spans more than 60 years, from his work with the equally legendary comedy troupe Monty Python which he co-founded to the iconic sitcom Fawlty Towers. Over his lengthy career, Cleese has had his fair share of controversies due to the material of his comedy.

Let me entertain you

» Welcome to the nth week of quarantine! The good news is we're still here. The bad news is "here" is getting a little too boring for our tastes. Oh, the joys of being able to café hop along Thong Lor, watch a movie in a cinema or maybe just stroll mindlessly around Siam.

Secret services

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 28/02/2020

» Bangkok is rapidly becoming a city with innovations that make life much easier. Yes, we at Guru have complained a lot about the city's many negative aspects but we also can't deny that the city has improved. Is there room for improvement? Oh, definitely. But there are many things that we use right now that we simply cannot imagine life without. What would life be without the services of GrabFood to deliver meals to your door or Shopee and Lazada to do your shopping from the comfort of your home? How about the Lock Box storage facilities we see in many BTS and MRT stations that help tourists roam without having to drag their luggage with them? Can we forget about the lifesaving GrabTaxi and GrabBike services? There are more services on the rise that you may not know about and that's what we're here to spotlight this week.

Festive feasting

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 15/12/2017

» This festive holiday season is upon us, and that means Christmas shopping, giving, receiving gifts, and a whole lot of eating coming our way. While the malls glisten in sparkling lights and towering Christmas trees loom over our heads, festivities are never complete without a proper feast. Sure, you can go for a home-cooked meal, but perhaps you're a noob or simply a disaster in the kitchen; maybe no one in the family really cooks or maybe you just want to do something different and make this year extra special. Since all of you know that we here at Guru care very much about you, our dear readers, we have taken it upon ourselves this week to give you what we consider our Christmas gift. So from us -- the wacky crew that's currently rushing to meet deadlines so we actually enjoy the holidays -- and from the bottom of our hearts, we present to you a list of places where you can feast this holiday season. Loose pants recommended.

Encapsulated

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 24/11/2017

» Hotels are not in short supply in the Big Mango, and there are different kinds to choose from. Conventional hotels are great, but a new trend is starting here in the city: capsule hotels. A concept originally from Japan -- and we all know Japan comes up with awesome stuff -- these capsule hotels foregoes the rooms and offers guests something simple: a space to sleep for the night. These hotels are ridiculously cheap, each having a unique vibe, and we're really excited that this is now a thing here in Bangkok. Here are five capsule hotels in the city for you to stay in, whether you're spending a few days here or maybe just want to sleep in a capsule... You know, as one does.
