This Gyllenhaal watch can be enjoyed to the end

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 31/12/2021

» Over the past few decades, we have seen Jake Gyllenhaal's massive transformation from being a Hollywood teenage heartthrob into one of the most diverse acting resumes around. Some of his best roles recently, usually revolve around high drama stories or within crime and thriller genres, like David Ayer's cop drama End Of Watch, Denis Villeneuve's Prisoners (2013) or Dan Gilroy's thriller Nightcrawler (2014). In between those years, Gyllenhaal's fun and expressive eyes became less reactive and more serious and grim. The Guilty, a new Netflix drama, feels almost like a continuation of that same persona by Gyllenhaal but with a unique and gripping story about a police officer at a 911 call centre in a high-stakes game against time to stop a kidnapping. It's a remake of the 2018 Danish film of the same name, directed by Antoine Fuqua of Training Day (2001), Brooklyn's Finest (2009) and Southpaw (2015) fame.

    A new generation slasher

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 15/10/2021

» Recycling stories isn't new but common practice in Hollywood. However, it seems to be the main focus of Netflix lately, especially in the horror genre as some of these movies don't bring anything new to the table. For example, Stranger Things is almost a carbon copy of Stephen King's novels and a few months ago, the Fear Street trilogy reintroduced Gen Z to the teen slasher genre, which was popular back in the 1980s and 1990s, but it too fell short of developing an identity of its own.

» Netflix's The Guilty is a riveting remake of Gustav Möller's acclaimed 2018 Danish crime thriller that uses one movie set in a single location but still keeps us engaged, thanks in part to a gallant performance by Jake Gyllenhaal who plays Joe Baylor, an imploding personality with a crocked past.

» Anyone who's been to Japan (or spent a decent amount of time on the internet) would have probably come across T-shirts with puzzling or badly translated English. Perusing CHAI's pastel-hued website gives you a similar experience except that everything actually makes sense -- "We Are New Exciting Onna (female) Band From Japan! NEO KAWAII ! COMPLEX IS ART!," its meta description announces. A click and a quick scroll down also give you an overview on the group's "NEO KAWAII" ethos, which essentially goes against any notions of the classic kawaii ("You don't need to have big eyes or have skinny legs to be KAWAII! There should be many more types of KAWAII, and everyone is KAWAII in her own way … Our insecurities make us who we are. The insecurities become art. KAWAII is a never-ending journey!").

    Don’t believe confessions

Life, Bernard Trink, Published on 26/05/2014

» Novels about prison are of a kind. An inmate is scheduled to be executed and someone, usually a newspaper reporter, has reason to believe that he’s innocent. Can he bring the evidence to the governor before the electric chair, gallows, gas chamber or needle snuffs out his life? It’s a race against time.
