A busy week for Apple and me

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 05/04/2017

» On March 28, there were updates for iOS (10.3) that introduced AFPS: the new Apple File System, which is expected eventually to expand to macOS. There may be some gains in space and speed but these are expected to be small. Also updated were macOS (10.12.4), WatchOS and tvOS.

    Successes, failures and a finale

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 12/04/2017

» On May 2, Apple will announce its Second Quarter Results for 2017. The conference call is scheduled for 2pm Cupertino Time on Tuesday, which is around 4am Wednesday here. In the next couple of weeks we can expect a series of comments about how Apple will fail; and on how it should spend its cash on buying companies. Ignore these: Apple does its own thing and is usually right in the long run.

Changes to Apple products and updates to apps

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 29/03/2017

» Despite several sure-fire rumours, there was no special event in March. Instead, there was a hint of change when the online stores went down for maintenance on Tuesday evening. A number of additions and changes were made to iPhones and iPads, while new Apple Watch bands were also announced. Apple updated its Swift Playgrounds app with new languages and announced Clips, a new iOS app for making videos: perfect for sharing on social-networking sites. It will be released in April.

A good quarter for Apple and looking to the future

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 08/02/2017

» Last week, Apple released figures for its most recent quarter, which includes the run up to the new year. There was revenue of US$78.4 billion, beating Wall Street experts again. We must wait for the often-predicted doom a little while longer. Apple thinks revenue for the next quarter should be between $51.5-53.5 billion.

MacBook Pro: Too Few USB-C accessories in Bangkok

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 04/01/2017

» The disturbing lack of suitable accessories in Thailand has marred an otherwise great start to my experience with the MacBook Pro. Apart from Apple's own adaptors, there is almost nothing here for users who need USB-C connectivity.

Advances in retail experiences for Bangkok's Mac users

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 25/01/2017

» Research company Gartner claims that 20% of organisations will use smartphones in place of physical access cards by 2020. A few days before reading that, I had been in the new head office of COM7, where staff are signed in and out using iBeacon and a smartphone app. This also controls access to specific areas. I was attending an Open Day at the building in Sanphawut Road, Bang Na.

15-inch MacBook Pro a delightful experience

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 30/11/2016

» Every time Apple releases a new product there is a rush to print. There have been thousands of comments about the new MacBook Pro and what is wrong with it (and Apple), but much of that wasted effort is by those who haven't even seen the device, let alone touched it.

    Making the MacBook Pro mine

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 07/12/2016

» My intention had been to run the 2016 MacBook Pro I have as a test machine, with the main work continuing on my 2013 Mac until its replacement arrives in a couple of weeks' time. By the time I wrote last week's eXtensions article, I was enjoying the new Mac so much that Plan B was hatched and I moved everything to the 2016 MacBook Pro.

    Worth waiting for

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 21/12/2016

» Apple announced its US$159 (5,700 baht) AirPods at the same time as the iPhone 7, but the Bluetooth-connected device was not made available to customers until last week. There was much online speculation that a problem was found in the production models, so the release was put back. It would have been wrong to release a device with a known problem for a number of obvious reasons.

    Those damn cables

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 28/12/2016

» The 13-inch MacBook Pro I ordered online arrived last week and I switched to that as soon as I could. The transition was relatively smooth, but there were a couple of adjustments. A problem with these new Macs is not the few adapters available, but the lack of suitable cables.
