Lessons from the top

Muse, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 24/02/2018

» A conversation with renowned couturier Somchai "Kai" Kaewthong is usually sparkled with the names of khunyings and historical titbits. It is exceedingly difficult to get the man to talk about himself, even if he would be well justified in doing so having been named this year's National Artist. In fact, today is National Artist Day. And along with 16 other figures who have also been honoured with the title, Somchai will be going through the formalities of royally receiving his recognition pin and honour plaque on this very day.

Let there be light

» If there is one thing Hungary is becoming known for, it is how this neoclassical, landlocked country is unexpectedly becoming the capital of projection mapping artists. Four prominent groups which hail from Budapest are considered among the top 10 projection artists in the world, and Limelight, which has created the "Beautiful Bangkok" 3D mapping currently showing on the Magnolias Ratchadamri Boulevard, is also one of those pioneers.

Inside the big tent

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 06/09/2017

» Now in its 19th year, Elle Fashion Week returned bigger and longer than ever -- spanning five days, from Aug 30 to Sept 3. Bangkok's symbol of fashion -- the big, white tent -- returned to CentralWorld to give its spectators a taste of the season's upcoming looks, featuring 15 shows and 21 designers. From old guard, established names to brand new labels making their debut, this season was a good mix of flamboyance, as well as sleek sophistication.

The virtuous one

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 14/04/2017

» Liam Cunningham is quite a funny bunny -- a stark opposite of the character he is best known for portraying: Game Of Thrones' dependably virtuous knight, Ser Davos Seaworth. While in Bangkok earlier this month, he unflinchingly munched the head off fried insects at the street stall and gleefully admitted to nicking tiny props from the set every year, be it the small wooden stag or coins from Braavos. He asks the props man first of course, and most of it ends up on his daughter's "wall of awesome" in her bedroom.

The wonder of Oz at Thong Lor Art Space

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 11/08/2016

» Everybody knows about Dorothy Gale and her adventures in Oz, but L. Frank Baum also has a bevy of other characters just as endearing and unique as the little girl who got tornadoed into the magical land away from her home in Kansas. If you've never heard of Tik-Tok before, Thong Lor Art Space offers you the chance to get up real close to what is possibly the world's first robot character portrayed in literature in The Adventures Of Tik-Tok, Man Of Oz this month. The first half will recount the adventures of the Wizard of Oz and Dorothy, before heading towards the land of Ev, where the "mechanical man" who was forgotten in a cave is later found by Dorothy.

Girls just wanna have fun

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 15/07/2016

» Two colossal brands are at play here: the first being New York City's most popular ghost-catching, proton-pack-toting squad, called the Ghostbusters, and the second being Hollywood's first lady of comedy that is Melissa McCarthy. Stew the two together and it becomes the don't-miss comedy of the summer, packed with familiarly satisfying ectoplasmic gags and villains that look like cartoon marshmallows.

Beyond the outer rim

Muse, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 25/06/2016

» Aviators never go out of fashion and for that reason, they should be a last resort if you're looking to make an eye-catching statement with eyewear. Venture outside of safe grounds this season and go for a more adventurous look. Of course, that's not to say you have to go Dolce & Gabbana attention-grabbing levels, with their explosion of colours in the collection inspired by Sicilian medieval knights in theatre. There are other pieces besides the masterpiece of the collection that tone down the bright colours, while other houses boast interesting (but no less striking) details. Be it monogrammed lenses, embedded chains, see-through frames, floral motifs or completely futuristic and impractical forms like Christian Dior's collab with Rihanna, it's always been about style (and not Sun protection) anyway.

Where filmmaking is a joy

Muse, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 16/04/2016

» When GTH made headlines last December by announcing that it would forever drop the curtain, movie lovers throughout the nation fell into collective mourning for a film house famed for both mainstream hits and cult-favourites, such as Hello Stranger and the billion-baht-grossing Pee Mak.
