Change the world, one photo at a time

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 04/05/2018

» Theerachat "Tom" Potisit is a freelance photographer who's behind many iconic images that went viral in recent years. On top of countless fashion shoots, you may have already seen his work, which stimulates conversation on relevant social issues without knowing the man. In 2014, he saw an opportunity to raise awareness on marine life conservation when a Bryde's whale beached in Samut Prakarn and staged a fashion shoot there. Remember the "Anatomy 101" exhibition at Chulalongkorn Hospital in 2015? It was a photo exhibition where Tom and Surachai "Pui" Saengsuwan, a noted fashion photographer, took beautiful, haunting pictures of models and celebs in a hospital setting to raise awareness on organ donation. Most recently, he organised "Know-R", a photography exhibition to highlight livelihood of communities along the Chao Phraya River. It was staged on an old rice barge in February. Tom has also earned a reputation as a photographer/conservationist for his contribution to raising awareness on endangered species over the years. Guru spoke with this fascinating photographer whose works combine art, fashion and raising awareness.

Aww-dorable Cafes

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 01/08/2014

» Thais are crazy for cute stuff. It is a fact. Remember how fast LINE and Rilakkuma tumblers from 7-Eleven sold out? How many times have you chatted with friends through stickers and emoji instead of actual letters? Do you know how many celeb dogs and cats there are in the Thai Facebook sphere nowadays? (They could fill a paperback book). What we’re trying to say is that cuteness is a real commodity here and some cafes in Bangkok are combining adorable edibles with cute characters to create their own atmosphere. Check out these mung ming frung fring (it’s how Thai kids are saying “cute” these days) venues to get your cute and cake fixes. Disclaimer: cuteness overload ahead.

The return of utt

» It came from our investor Dr. Prasert Prasarttong-Osoth [CEO of Bangkok Airways] and M.L. Nandhika Varavarn [vice president for corporate communications of the airline and MD of the channel]. Basically they wanted to create a new standard for locally made English TV. Nandhika recruited people from different areas of the industry for the channel, including me. I'm in charge of entertainment programming. These include shows that are produced in-house, outsourced and syndicated. IN Channel is 70 per cent entertainment, 30 per cent news.
