Fit, Firm, Fun

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 29/08/2014

» We're all guilty of finding every excuse to cancel our morning jog with a friend, whether we're too hungover or the prospect of running in this heat is just too much to handle. Now, we know that going to the gym is pretty darn boring; the floor usually smells and the treadmill is always being used by fit seniors running at a much faster pace than you. So to help you stop making excuses, we've scoured the city searching for fun alternative sporting activities — apart from jogging and sit-ups — that will get you fit and firm with the fun.

The campaigns

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 03/10/2014

» Recently, Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha issued a 23-page policy statement on how he intends to get this country back on its feet. Of course, we’re not one to criticise his foolproof plans, nor suggest that he should come up with another song, this time collaborating with popular artists like Thaitanium or Joey Boy to keep the young’uns from switching radio stations every time the tune comes on. Instead, Guru enlists the help of aspiring change-makers from different industries to come up with their own political campaigns of what improvements they’d like to see, what laws should be implemented and even the lyrics to their own songs; so if the present and future PMs ever run out of ideas, they’ll know where to look.

Winter pop-ups winter

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 28/11/2014

» Noticed something different about Bangkok? No, it’s not the traffic-free roads or that Thais have stopped taking photos of their meals before eating (ha! Don’t be ridiculous). We’ll give you a clue: it’s in the air and it’s making us a little less miserable. It’s the beginning of winter, or, as we know it — the extremely short period of the year when the whole country gets giddy over a two-to-four degree dip in temperature. Nevertheless, we’re going to take full advantage of this and guide you to this winter’s best seasonal pop-ups.

Full metal madness

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 12/12/2014

» Jon Nutt is a familiar name in the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) scene in Thailand. The American is the country’s biggest promoter of the sport, both figuratively and literally (he’s 193cm). After becoming fed up with run-of-the-mill martial arts competitions, he set up Full Metal Dojo (fb.com/fullmetaldojo) – a series of events across Thailand that aims to give local and international talents a chance to compete and be recognised. Here, Jon gives us a few insights into the world of MMA and tells us why there’s more to the sport than just people beating each other senseless in a cage.

French frills and thrills

» The current trend of importing international chefs to Bangkok is proving to be a big hit. Foodies here are surely thankful that they no longer have to travel to Singapore or Hong Kong for a taste of the Michelin star experience. Henk Savelberg, the Dutch superstar chef, has chosen an interesting (if not convenient) location for his restaurant – right next to the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands where multi-coloured EU cows can be seen grazing on the front lawn. If that doesn’t make him feel at home, we don’t know what will. Opting for light grey tablecloths, modern hanging lights and large window panes, Savelberg offers a sense of casual comfort that is neither intimidating nor uptight. Regular diners include guests from the hotel, expats and high rollers whose list of favourite things include caviar and imported chicken.

Create a scene

» Maybe that secret bar, your favourite hideaway known only to a lucky few, is turning into a Thonglorite mosh pit. Or perhaps your eyes are finally giving in after an intense, five-hour competition with a blank Word document.

All aboard to stomach satisfaction

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 13/03/2015

» Bangkokians love two things: Instagramming daily meals and avoiding traffic-clogged roads. So we’ve decided to combine these two passions by hopping aboard the BTS to embark on an epicurean ride. Sure, the Skytrain is often freezing cold and overcrowded, but we appreciate the fact that it’s the most efficient way to chomp through town. Use our concise guide to eateries and hang-out spots that can be accessed by BTS, which every urbanite should visit at least once to get beyond the usual Thong Lor and Silom nests.

Brunch, redefined

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 08/05/2015

» Just when we thought Bangkok’s culinary scene had had enough of civilised brunches (seeing as how hordes of foodies have migrated to EmQuartier, where they queue up and chow down on all the latest fads), Taper opens its doors, with a surprising brunch concept in the middle of an eggs-Benedict-infested Thong Lor. Far from predictable, the dishes here are Asian-inspired and incorporate modern cooking techniques, which isn’t much of a surprise when you learn that the head chef has worked in the kitchen of Spice Market New York and is backed by the guys behind Le Du. The restaurant has two floors, and although space is a little tight, it isn’t prohibitively cramped. Seats at the counter offer the best view of the open kitchen. Or head upstairs, where proper tables are set out with chairs and couches perfect for relaxing.

State of the arts

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 19/06/2015

» Compared to the rest of Asia, Thailand’s art scene has some serious catching up to do. The lack of creativity partially stems from outdated educational programmes, which consist of boring lessons that limit originality and daring ideas. Enter Paron Mead, the man who’s about to change the face of Thai art education. He’s opened the Paron School of Art (Sukhumvit Soi 63, between Ekamai Sois 11 and 13, 089-795-8765, www.paronschoolofart.com), where he has created a professional, impactful and exciting art and design curriculum, perfectly suited for artists of any age.

An icy marriage

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 10/07/2015

» We live in a country with the sort of climate in which even standing still will result in a porcine sweat. Thais, then, tend to welcome new ice cream joints with open arms — is there a better way to cool off than with a frozen dessert?
