» Last week Apple rescheduled its quarterly earnings call from Oct 27 to Oct 25: a Tuesday, apparently due to a scheduling conflict. Several commentators are hoping that there could be a new product announcement just before the weekend. Between the two dates is an event in New York when Microsoft will make announcements: "To see what's next for Windows 10." Some speculate there will be other interesting revelations.

» There is so much that is still being discovered about Apple's soon-to-be-available updates, as people delve into the beta releases and sift through the documentation. Many analysts and developers are quite excited about what will be possible with the more integrated iOS, WatchOS, tvOS and MacOS.

» We start 2016 with the usual predictions about Apple: no innovation, low share prices (not as low as 2008) and estimates of falling iPhone sales as if that were it. We should have a better idea later this month with the quarterly financial figures. In the meantime, there are predictions that Apple will buy Tesla, with some analysts speculating on which companies Apple should buy. Some never learn.

» Next Tuesday, Oct 27, Apple will announce its fiscal 4th quarter earnings at 2pm Cupertino Time (5pm New York). That is 4am here on Wednesday (9pm GMT +7). After the announcements, there is always a question and answer session in which Tim Cook and Luca Maestri do their best to fend off questions about future products. I expect there will be questions about the Apple Car, which may or may not exist. There will be a live audio webcast of the event at investor.apple.com.

» Last Wednesday, not only was there the expected update to OS X, with El Capitan, but version 9.0.2 of iOS 9 was also released and my iOS devices were updated quickly. The first download of El Capitan for my MacBook Pro failed and I had to start again. I also downloaded an update for the MacBook. I left the downloads running and when I came back from lunch, they were ready to roll. I installed the new OS X on two machines at the same time and both were good.

» I have had guests at my home all week and it has been something of a mini-Apple event. I bought iPads for the two friends who already had an iPad mini each. I gave them the latest iPad mini 3. With these we had over a dozen devices together and I could not resist a photograph that included a MacBook, MacBook Pro 13-inch (2012), MacBook Pro 13-inch (2010), two x iPad mini 2, 2 x iPad mini 3, iPad Air 2, 2 x iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and an Airport Extreme router under the table. There was also an Apple TV behind me.

» Last week in Cupertino, Tim Cook along with Craig Federighi and Phil Schiller introduced some more new products which were more along the lines of a logical evolution rather than major surprises. Nonetheless, eyebrows were raised a little, especially by a new iMac.

» By the time you read this, Apple will have announced its third-quarter financial results (last night in fact). Predictions suggest that something like 30 to 40 million iPhones will have been sold. Mac sales were expected to be a little under 4 million, slightly lower than before, but at a time when PC sales are slipping worldwide. There are also the invisibles, like iTunes sales, which are usually in excess of $4 billion for the quarter.

» A week after the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple moved on. Safari 5 was out, the iPhone 4 was coming and iOS4 was announced for June 21. Analysts pored over the information - some second-hand and incomplete - the pundits predicted the end of the Mac, while the rest of us sat back to wait for what came next. We did not wait long.
