» As climate change intensifies, seasonal patterns have become increasingly erratic, leading to more frequent and severe droughts and floods, as well as rising temperatures. Meanwhile, global water demand continues to grow — driven by population increases and rising consumption — placing mounting pressure on already limited water resources. “Water” is rapidly becoming a critical risk to both human well-being and economic stability. Recognising the urgency of this challenge, the United Nations has designated June 17 as the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought to raise global awareness and promote collective action to protect the environment and natural resources.

Anutin Pushes for Phuket Water Pipeline Project

» The Ministry of Interior, led by Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, along with Deputy Minister Chada Thaised and Pornpoth Penpas, Director General of the Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA), conducted a site survey to monitor drought resolution efforts at the PWA Phuket Branch. The PWA was instructed to expedite the water pipeline project in Phuket to ensure water security for consumption in the tourist towns on the Andaman coast, focusing on the Bang Niao Dam Reservoir. Additionally, a low-pressure raw water pumping plant at Klong Je Ta, Sri Sunthon Subdistrict, Thalang District, Phuket Province, was built on 9 May 2024.

PWA and DDPM Renew Pact to Combat Drought

» The Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA), led by Chakapong Kamchan, Deputy Governor (Operation 2) and Acting Governor, along with the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), Ministry of Interior, Thailand, led by Chaiwat Chuntirapong, Director-General of the DDPM, have jointly signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the third consecutive year. This agreement aims to address drought-related issues and ensure the provision of raw water for public water supply services. The signing ceremony occurred on 27 March 2024, at the PWA headquarters in Laksi District, Bangkok. Chakapong Kamchan highlighted PWA's dedication to providing clean and safe tap water that meets public consumption standards and its preparedness to effectively manage drought crises. The PWA actively monitors water situations and anticipates shortages, particularly at Branch 234.

PWA Launches Public Drought Relief Initiative 2024

» The Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA), in conjunction with the Royal Thai Army (RTA), the Department of Groundwater Resources, the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), and PTT Public Company Limited, initiated the "Public and Government Drought Relief 2024" campaign at the Royal Thai Army Headquarters, located on Ratchadamnoen Nok road, Phra Nakhon district, Bangkok, on March 6, 2024. This endeavour aims to provide 234 free-of-charge water supply points to assist individuals nationwide affected by the ongoing drought crisis.
