    Tourist tax could work

    News, Editorial, Published on 28/05/2019

» The government's fresh initiative to charge a tax on tourists who visit Thailand is not a bad idea. But it should not be executed until the government has mapped out an effective plan to manage and allocate the potentially huge revenue generated from the levy.

    A better Korean option

Life, Suwitcha Chaiyong, Published on 06/05/2019

» South Korea is one of the most popular destinations for Thais -- both tourists and illegal workers. According to the Ministry of Labour, there are 165,854 Thais living in South Korea, 143,169 of them illegally. Such a large number of illegal workers has caused Korean immigration officers to strictly screen Thai visitors. On April 20, a Facebook user shared a post saying that only five Thai passengers from a low-cost flight could get through Seoul, while the rest were detained for deportation. On the post, many comments blamed illegal workers for causing trouble for those attempting to travel legitimately. An unlawful worker defended himself by saying others didn't have sympathy for his poverty.

    The Power of one

    Pulling hens' teeth

News, Post Reporters, Published on 05/06/2019

» After the debacle we have witnessed in the last few weeks with "experienced" politicians pushing for ministerial positions, going back on their previous promises to voters and looking for power incommensurate with their electoral results, the Future Forward Party's problem with a "young and boisterous" member seems rather minuscule.

    Living in the past

Life, Pongpet Mekloy, Published on 10/06/2019

» Apart from giving rise to keyboard warriors and other nuisances, the digital age also has a good side. One thing I love most about today's world is that it has given me easy access to tons of photographs from the distant past. And that, at least to me, is almost like time travel.

    Expand train capacity

    News, Postbag, Published on 02/06/2019

» Your May 31 editorial "Tickets to ride too expensive" neglects an important consideration. While I have no problem with making the electric trains more affordable so more low-income people can use them, doing so without adding to capacity will only make the city's traffic problems worse.

    Thaksin's no angel

    News, Postbag, Published on 26/05/2019

» Re: "Coups not the answer", (PostBag, May 23). I fully agree with Felix Qui that coups are not the solution to Thailand's political maladies and government corruption. I also agree that Thaksin Shinawatra was highly successful in garnering the support of poorer segments of society, largely because he was the first politician to give marginalised Thais any attention, however meagre.
