» Rosewood is not a name that rings any personal bells, but I first unknowingly came across it while on a night out in Beijing. The so-far-lousy night took a turn when the social editor of a high-society magazine ushered me to get off my stool at the dingy bar we were in. We were first-timers in Beijing and unlike the Western press in the group, she was in no mood for pole dancers and Mandarin rock covers. She was the most well-informed and refined tippler of the Thai group, so we trustingly followed her taste to Rosewood Beijing, knowing whatever it was, it wasn't going to be the Chinese version of Patpong. It was the right decision, the one we should have gone with three hours earlier. What greeted us upon arrival were stunning high ceilings, stylish understatement and immense relief that there are chic and modern places to head to in the post-Mao capital.

» It feels like there is an Hour Glass store at practically every main street corner in Singapore, but the Hour Glass store that rules them all is situated on Bideford Road, just off Orchard and right next to Paragon. Fashioned under the name Malmaison and having sat at that location since 2011, the opulent enclave of 745m² is largely under the radar to the common pedestrian, despite the fact that what is housed inside could well become your most lush watch-buying experience ever. Even a local tour guide confirms that most Singaporeans are oblivious to the lavish encounter that awaits inside.

Then again, if you are inclined towards the precious and pricey types of writing instruments, you probably already have Montblanc's head of client relations and high artistry on your contact list. But for those who are just starting out with collecting and happened to miss his visit to Bangkok last month, fret not, because we also didn't get to see the €1.5 million (57.8 million baht) pen we had hoped to see in real life at a private suite at the Okura Prestige either.
