» Since Doctor Strange, released in 2016, Marvel has been on an impressive roll. The studio's next three films -- Guardians Of The Galaxy 2, Spiderman: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok -- were all critically acclaimed successes, praised for their creativity and refreshing tweaks to the usual superhero formula. The films were a much-needed second wind to the ever-bloated Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), proving to audiences that even after more than 15 films, there is still room for us to be wowed by the studio's colourful and bombastic superhero shenanigans.

    A battle worth fighting

» Towards the end of 12 Strong -- the new Jerry Bruckheimer-produced war movie that hit Thai theatres this week -- there is a scene featuring protagonist Captain Mitch Nelson (Chris Hemsworth), in full US army war-gear, leading a charging column of Afghan freedom-fighters on horseback into a Taliban gunline, complete with tanks and missile-launchers. In true Hollywood super-soldier fashion, the captain picks off jihadists left and right while holding his assault rifle one-handed, sprinting his horse headfirst into a flurry of scything machine-gun rounds. He comes out the other side unscathed of course, thanks to his prodigious plot armour, and proceeds to save the day as scores of freedom fighters are cut down all around him.

» The little pleasures are always the best ones. Running your hand over a smooth stone or metal surface, seeing a lid sit perfectly flush with the lip of a pot, these seemingly simple manifestations of perfection, of symmetry, are what help us make sense of the confusion that is life.

» Most of us still remember her from E.T. -- and that was 36 years ago, when she was seven and playing a girl who connects with the wrinkly extraterrestrial on a quest to go home. She also went on to play a sexy seducer in Poison Ivy (1992), one of Charlie's Angels (2000), a girl with a short-term memory in 50 First Dates (2004), and an accidental songwriter in Music and Lyrics ( 2007).

» To be fair, Kingsman: The Golden Circle -- the sequel to 2015's cheeky spy-parody Kingsman: The Secret Service -- manages to deliver on almost everything that made its original a surprise hit. The exaggerated sense of style, zany spy-gadgets and over-the-top fight choreography make their way from the first film, bolstered by an extended all-star cast that includes Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, Channing Tatum, Halle Berry and Pedro Pascal.

    Please, touch the art

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 09/08/2017

» It's not easy learning art when you can't see. For many blind or visually-impaired students in a regular school curriculum, art class can become a tedious and limited affair. While they may be able to memorise names and dates for a quiz, blind students can struggle to keep up with their visually normal peers in more practical tasks or assignments, creating a gap between the capabilities of visually-impaired and regular students.
