Siamstagram

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 19/04/2013

» Despite our sketchy 3G connectivity and low-speed internet connection in general, Bangkok is among the top places when it comes to social media. According to socialbakers.com, at the time of writing Bangkok is the city with the highest number of Facebookers - almost 12.8 million users. The Czech-based firm, which provides social media analysis and stats, also ranks Thailand 13th in the world list with almost 19 million users. Moreover, given that Suvarnabhumi Airport and Siam Paragon took the top two as the most Instagrammed places in 2012 says something about how tech-literate we Thais are.

» The end of the year is approaching as Christmas decorations (and the city-wide rate of photo-taking) go up. And one can only put so many fists under their chin or make so many V-sign hand gestures while being photographed before it becomes old.

Socially Screwed

» Despite enabling us to stalk our exes to our heart's content, social media can also have some negative side effects. For the average person, this could come in the form of almost being run over by a car because you're too preoccupied sending cute (stupid) stickers to a friend via LINE. Not to mention all the weight that goes straight to your ass because you're surfing YouTube until the wee hours, or the horror of having your boss friend request you on Facebook.

» What would you expect to find in a yakuza den? A jar of pickled pinkies? Dried blood stains on the tatami? Samurai swords and more samurai swords? Heavily tattooed men wearing nothing but fundoshi? (Don't image search that term if you don't have any homoerotic tendencies.)

You're fired!

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 09/03/2012

» What's the riskiest thing you've ever done at the office? Stealing your boss's hair from his/her desk to use in a voodoo doll? Taking a secret nap in the meeting room? Coming to work unwashed after partying all night? Or just generally slacking off? We have all done a thing or two that management would frown upon (if they came to know of it). And you should be careful because, unlike esteemed MPs and high-ranking officials, Somchais and Somyings get fired every day for their mistakes and sometimes for causes you can't imagine. We've selected five cases of extraordinary sackings which, in hindsight, reveal tips to help you keep your job or at least give you some ideas to go out with a bang.
