» The Dark Tower had every reason to be good. It's an adaptation of a renowned series of novels by Stephen King. It features Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey in leading roles. It's also directed (and scripted) by the man who wrote the 2009 Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, as well as 2012's A Royal Affair, both stellar films.

» From quizzes and club activities to agonising over an uninterested crush, the high-school experience is fraught with peril for the average teenager. When said teenager has superpowers, and desperately wants to impress Ironman so he can join the Avengers, things can get even trickier, as Peter Parker (Tom Holland) finds out in Spider-Man: Homecoming, the webslinger's solo-debut feature under Marvel's cinematic universe. Trading in the usual cataclysmic conflicts of Marvel's earlier films for a more personal story of responsibility (a Spider-Man staple) and maturity, Homecoming manages to feel like a fresh take on the (arguably) tired Marvel formula, being the best Spider-Man film since 2004's Spider-Man 2.

» Call it teen power. Or the epitome of kawaii culture. Or a great marketing idea. Some may also detect a strange, Lolita-tinted vibe. » It's a boundless shame, to say the least, that both Hugh Jackman and Sir Patrick Stewart will both be making their departures from their respective roles as Wolverine and Professor X after Logan, the 10th entry to their long-running X-Men franchise. Doubly so, since both actors have never been as riveting as they are in Logan, one of the best superhero films ever made, telling a very grounded, personal story about a broken man, not a superhero or larger-than-life symbol. In this regard, Logan elevates itself from a superb superhero film to a superb film, period, one that all superhero films to come should strive to emulate.

» As is true of most horror films, it's the silent, creeping moments of uncertainty leading up to the jumps-scares that create the most suspense, as audiences tense up in anticipation, hoping against hope that the main characters be spared any horrendous fate lying around the corner. Don't Breathe, the aptly named sophomore feature from director Fede Alvarez (who also did the 2013 remake of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead), embodies this philosophy to the hilt, taking its audience on a relentless train-ride of white-knuckle tension from start to finish.

» It was a sobering afternoon of hard truths following the screening of the documentary, The Hunting Ground at SF Cinema at CentralWorld on Saturday. The film tells the alarming story of sexual assault at many of US universities — including some of their most prestigious — as well as these universities’ appalling efforts in trying to keep these attacks hidden. The powerful and shocking film relies on on-camera testimonies of many young women and men who speak on how they were raped in colleges and how those colleges denied them justice.
