» When discussing LGBT, the letter that sometimes gets the least airtime is L, which represents "lesbian". While coverage of gay and transgender people seems to have increased, lesbians remain a minority within the minority. As a reporter interested in the issue, I always want to write more about the lesbian community in Thailand and elsewhere.

» I could hear my neighbour scream hysterically when our women's volleyball team beat Japan to be crowned Asian Champions last Saturday. It was simply the best game in the tournament, and these long-legged ladies made the nation and their fans _ a lot of them gay _ proud, especially me.

» When Hollywood couple Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones announced a split last week after 13 years of marriage to "evaluate" their relationship, for some people thoughts turned to human papillo-mavirus (HPV). Two months earlier, Douglas had made comments about his throat cancer, saying that it had been caused by the virus and was contracted from oral sex. He later clarified this, saying he did not contract it from Zeta-Jones and media outlets have reported that it was likely a pre-existing infection.

» When you walk into a room inside the white colonial house, a bed dominates the empty space. Instead of a mattress, you see a bunch of cacti in different shapes and sizes. Amidst the green thorny plants are four hand sculptures placing in different spots on the bed; they seem to be giving a sign to the living things trapped in one place.

Titled "Central Men With Style 2013: Boys Next Door", this year the leading shopping centre invited famous actors and celebrities to strut the runway with professional models including million-dollar showbiz boy Mario Maurer, television star Atichart Chumnanont and Teeradetch Metawarayut, as well as winners of the reality singing contest The Star 9.

» The phenomenon of Facebook users changing their profile pictures to a red equal sign last week might have left some people puzzled, but it has a simple enough explanation. The picture that went viral was derived from the Human Rights Campaign's symbol for equality, which is being used in support of two cases concerning same-sex marriage now before the US Supreme Court.

» Everything about a barbershop is nostalgic: the buzzing-bee sound of a clipper, the fragrant scent of talcum, the cut-throat razor and rotating chair. For most Thai men, they evoke memories of their formative years, a place where as students they were given a proper (military-style, in certain cases) short haircut as required by their schools.

» Simon Winchester has always been fascinated with the sea. His childhood dream was to become a sailor, wearing crisp, white, tropical shorts, commanding a ship. Young Winchester followed his passion and took an exam for the British Royal Navy. He did a great job during the process, only to find out that he is colour-blind _ red and green elude him _ during a medical examination. The dream of the ocean eluded him, too. But not forever.
