Southeast Asian masters in the spotlight

Life, Apipar Norapoompipat, Published on 17/01/2018

» To any regular art enthusiast, the mention of 19th century artists brings to mind European (especially French) masters like Claude Monet, Edouard Manet, Auguste Renoir and Edgar Degas. Asian artists rarely get any mention or recognition -- and unless you're Indonesian or Filipino, the names Raden Saleh Sjarif Boestaman (1811-1880) and Juan Luna y Novicio (1857-1899) would probably mean nothing to you.

The many faces of France

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 12/01/2018

» At the simplest level Agnes Varda's and JR's Visages Villages is a documentary film about photography and art-making. Going slightly deeper, as the title suggests, it's a film about faces and places, about people and their villages -- rural communities, farmland, factories and towns in the unglamorous corners of France. And yet at its most moving, most humanist moments, this film by an 89-year-old filmmaker and a 33-year-old street artist is about the heartbreaking ephemerality of art, about mortality, memory and the transient nature of everything, above all of life itself.

Where there's smoke...

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 29/01/2016

» If you need proof as to why Bangkok is just as deserving of the "foodie capital" title as Hong Kong and Singapore, pay Il Fumo at visit. Powerhouse trio Choti Leenutaphong, Debby Tang and chef Luca Appino, responsible for Bottega's nostalgic comfort and exceeding our cocktail expectations at Vesper, are now making us swoon over charcoal-grilled and dry-aged beef. The restaurant has chosen to keep the original facade of a beautiful house dating back to the 1950s, in which descendants of King Rama IV resided. The interior, however, is all about subdued colours, and minimalistic, contemporary decor. Fitting, we thought, with the rather purist approach to cuisine, which is heavily focused on ingredients and cutting-edge techniques. There is a separate bar area, dimly lit, well-stocked and decked out in dark wood, reminiscent of treasured locales the likes of Bar Hemingway at The Ritz Paris and Dry Martini Bar in Barcelona.

A traditional legacy

Melalin Mahavongtrakul, Published on 15/07/2014

» Seventy-three years is close to the average lifespan for men in many parts of the world. But for Chaophraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital in Prachin Buri, which marks its 73rd anniversary this year, this is just a drop in the bucket, the tranche of time it has taken for the first step in what may be a lengthy journey: its mission to revive traditional Thai herbal medicine in a society which has long cast off what were considered outmoded ways in favour of the Western approach to healthcare.

The quest for parity

Life, Published on 07/02/2012

» Being born female is the result of bad karma. Women are innately inferior to men in wisdom and other spiritual qualities. The male form is the better vehicle for spiritual progress. These are the traditional _ deeply rooted and arguably still widely held _ views found in many Buddhist countries, Thailand included, despite there being no dispute of the Buddha's own unequivocal confirmation that women are also capable of being enlightened.
