Dial Z For Zero

Guru, Pasavat Tanskul, Published on 01/02/2019

» Plastic pollution is an ever-increasing threat to health and the environment, signalling a desperate call for change. Madeleine Recknagel aims to fight the "throwaway" lifestyle we have become so accustomed to by leading a zero-waste lifestyle with a philosophy of rethink, refuse, reduce, reuse, repair, recycle and rot. The lecturer gives talks and hosts workshops at various institutions and events, highlighting issues, as well giving out solutions on the use of plastic. She recently did a talk at TEDxChiangMai last year titled 'From Sustainable Self to Sustainable Us'. She has a blog and Facebook/Instagram page called "The Sustainable Self", which serves as a platform for her to provide tips and insights to hosting community workshops on how to live a waste-free lifestyle.

Beyond the ropes

Guru, Pasavat Tanskul, Published on 19/10/2018

» In Bangkok's Charoen Krung area, tucked within an alley lies Maison Close, a dark bar/art gallery and home to some of the more uncommon tastes in art from abstract calligraphy to ero guro. However, as you enter the venue on some nights, art isn't the only focus but a blindfolded woman hung in suspension with ropes. The ropes have been tied up by a rope artist and her model serves as a canvas for elaborate and intricate patterns. Despite looking uncomfortable, the model, dubbed a rope bunny, is in a state of stillness and relaxation, with the ropes symmetrically wrapped around the curves of her body -- something beautiful or mesmerising. This is shibari or the art of Japanese rope bondage. Enter at your own risk.

Talking heads

Guru, Pasavat Tanskul, Published on 28/09/2018

» In most countries, negativity towards mental health and depression still looms large, casting doubt and uncertainty for those who suffer from the common yet complicated mental illnesses to talk about it. "Crazy" or "insane" are words often used for such people, and because of the shame and stigma attached to mental health, it prevents most from seeking professional help. However, several groups and projects have been established to help gain a better understanding of what such people go through, and to raise awareness. Knowing what to say to someone who is depressed may be difficult, but these groups have provided a platform for those wanting to help and more so for those who need help.

» With a passion for travelling, hotels have always had a special place in her heart for Wimintra Raj. As a child, her parents would take her to hotels where she enjoyed dining at the buffet and was mesmerised by the magical act of having her room looking nice and clean the next day. Today, she owns a factory for hotel uniforms and has partnered with an environmentally-friendly factory in China that produces recycled uniforms, as well as being the founder and editor-in-chief of Hotelintel.co, a business-to-business (B2B) publication. The website serves as a portal for news of all things hotels, hospitality and industry-related investment, and features hoteliers and chefs based in Thailand. A graduate in political science, Wimintra is undertaking a micro master's degree online for hospitality management at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. As the website turns four this year, it will be hosting a panel discussion at Gaysorn Village on Sep 27 titled 'Communcation that Sells'.

» After setting up booths in EmQuartier's gourmet market section and Mahidol University last year, Summer Bowl Hawaiian Cafe opened up their shop last month, a mere five weeks as of this publishing. Having met each other in Hawaii in 2016, founders Jean Patavinthranond and Tyler McGee wanted to bring a piece of the islands to Thailand, where Hawaiian food is a rarity. It is because of this that they gained inspiration to open up a Hawaiian cafe in Thong Lor.
