» As the new year begins, it is high time to look back at the past year's achievements and, at the same time, to look ahead towards the next. If the Covid-19 pandemic which began in late 2019 and early 2020 took the world by surprise, and 2021 proved to be another year of daunting challenges, 2022 could see countries around the world continue to struggle, trying to open despite the emergence of new variants of the coronavirus, like the current Omicron.

» After watching the documentary Citizen Jane: Battle for the City last weekend, I finally found something in common between New York City and Bangkok -- the obsession with infrastructure development at the cost of local communities. What happened to New York City planning six decades ago reminds me of what's happening to development in Bangkok nowadays.

» The cab driver pressed on the accelerator, driving fast and furiously until I felt enough was enough; I ordered him to pull over, gave him the fare and stepped out of the car. Picking up a local passenger like me from a shopping mall on Sukhumvit Road is not a way for him to make much money. I bet he drove straight back along the same road to pick up tourists.
