World Food Day

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 16/10/2020

» Today (October 16) is World Food Day. Don't feel bad that you don't know that it's a thing because I only learned about it last week. This international day is created in honour of the date of the founding of the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. It's celebrated in many countries to raise awareness on important issues such as food hunger, food security, malnutrition and the impact of our food consumption on Mother Nature with different themes each year. To commemorate the day, I would like to suggest ways you can partake.

There is such thing as a stupid question

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 18/09/2020

» They say there is no such thing as a stupid question. Idiomatically speaking, this adage may be true but, for Thai textbooks, there may be some, in a literal sense.

If Thai Politics Were Good...

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 24/07/2020

» A new round of student-led protests against the government erupted last Saturday in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. They demanded the dissolution of parliament, no harassment of government critics and amendments to the military-written Constitution, which they deem to secure premiership for Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha in elections last March. They gave the government two weeks to respond or else they would ramp up their protests.

Hairy situation

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 10/07/2020

» Schools are back in session and so is the debate over the student hairstyle. A new batch of pictures of students whose hair got cut or shaved poorly against their will, as a form of punishment, by their teachers has been recently circulated online. We're probably getting another set once the next hair inspection day comes. Last Friday, student activists submitted a petition to the Ministry of Education asking for clarity over the hairstyle rule. You see, the ministry has already allowed students to wear their hair long so long as it's neat and complies with other conditions. However, a few schools still take it upon themselves to cut students' hair that they deem "inappropriate".

You go, girl!

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 03/07/2020

» A student by the name Ploy staged an impromptu protest in Siam Square last Saturday, pictures and videos of which were posted by two Twitter handles @BadStudent_ and @NuttaaBow. She sat on a chair hands-tied behind her back and mouth taped shut. A placard hanging from her neck reads, "This student violates a school rule by wearing her hair long past her eye lobes and in bangs, destroying the unique identity of Thai students. Please punish her." It ends with a hashtag "#เลิกบังคับหรือจับตัด (#StopForcingOrCutting)". A call to stop forcing Thai students to have a certain type of haircut or having their hair cut by the teachers against their will.

Kudos to steps toward diversity and equality

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 12/06/2020

» There has been welcoming news for the LGBT community in Thailand, just in time for pride month. I would like to give kudos to two major organisations that have shown support for diversity and the right to self-expression in Thailand.
