» 1. The Bangkok Arts and Cultural Centre brings us the latest feature in their Cinema Diverse film festival, with this year's theme -- The Female Perspective -- seeing five talented female directors in Thailand, each selecting one film to be screened at the festival. This week's offering, chosen by Anocha Suwichakornpong (Mundane History, By the Time It Gets Dark), is the 2010 film The Autobiography Of Nicolae Ceausescu, a non-fiction, 20-year chronicle of the fall of communism in Romania and the Soviet Union, cut entirely from news footage collected from the two countries. The screening will take place today from 4pm to 8.30pm, and will be followed by a discussion with Anocha and Andrei Ujica, the film's director. Tickets cost 60 Baht.

Carrying the weight of history

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 10/11/2016

» It has been a month since Thailand suffered the devastating loss of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Thousands of mourning Thais still linger around the Sanam Luang area daily, to be close to His Majesty's remains, currently being kept in the Grand Palace as preparations are made, per the ancient traditions, for the Royal Cremation Ceremony, which it is believed will take place in Sanam Luang some time in 2017.

» Bend, knead, squeeze, relaxed and healed -- Thai massage is an ancient art that retains its contemporary relevance and actually gains steadfast popularity. Traditional Thai massage establishments have grown in number in Thailand and abroad, but the nerve centre of it all remains Wat Phra Chettuphon, or Wat Pho.

» 1. We've made several mentions of The Forest, one of two Thai short films to be featured at the prominent 18th Far East Film Festival earlier this year. Hailed as a masterpiece by foreign critics for its "classic horror-style camera angles" and its "unique perspective and presentation of Isan culture", those who missed the film's limited screening in SF World Cinema last month can get another chance at watching the film at the Filmmaker's Forum event at the Whiteline Bar on Silom Road tomorrow. The event will also be attended by director Paul Spurrier, who will be discussing his experiences with the film. Screening begins at 8pm.

Stone on Snowden

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 07/10/2016

» Director Oliver Stone likes to tell stories of larger-than-life characters. Or not just characters, but real people caught up in the swirl of American history, which is sometimes to say world history: John F. Kennedy in JFK (1991); Jim Morrison in The Doors (1991); Richard Nixon in Nixon (1995); Fidel Castro in Commandante (2003); Alexander the Great in Alexander (2005); and George W Bush in W (2008). The fuzzy line between glory and shame of American policy is also his favourite subject, such as in the Vietnam War-set Platoon (1986), Wall Street (1987), Born On The Fourth Of July (1989) and World Trade Center (2006).

Five things you need to know this week

» 1 Treat yourself to some of the best short films in recent Thai history with Lost In Blue, a collection of three student-made films revolving around various types of heartbreak. The three films (Wannan Kong Duen -- That Day Of The Month, Rain and Glowstick) -- directed by recent graduates of Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Communication Arts -- have collectively won various awards both in Thailand and abroad. The long list of accolades includes the White Elephant Film Award, the Young Thai Artist Award, and, most prominently, the Special Jury Mention award from the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival. The latter is known as one of the most prestigious short-film competitions in the world, and that makes Wannan Kong Duen one of only two Thai short films ever to win an award at the competition. The film is being shown exclusively at SF World Cinema, CentralWorld.

» 4 In collaboration with Inès de la Fressange, the French fashion titan whose name is "synonymous with Parisian chic", Uniqlo has released a new line of women's clothing inspired by the 1960s French fashion, when "the ready-to-wear industry led to the collapse of the hierarchy that had been the height of long-established haute couture". The first of a three-part collection (with the second and third releasing in October and November, respectively) -- now in stores -- is dubbed La Femme 70s, which expresses the "free and open feel of the 1970s".

Walk on the wild side

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 09/09/2016

» There are many ways to travel the world. Some people prefer to fly, others drive, while others ride boats, motorcycles or bicycles. But to physically walk around the world? That's not something many people can claim to do. Less than 20, to be specific, according to Meigo Mark, the 26-year-old Estonian traveller who arrived in Thailand late last month, two years and three months since he began his journey from his home country in northern Europe -- all on foot.
