» The Setting: With a name like Toro, you might expect medieval looking (and smelling) walls draped with bull heads, men boasting bare tattooed arms, floors covered in hay, waiters dressed in red running for their lives and other bits of evidence pointing towards man's obsession with the blood sport of bull fighting. Or maybe we got a bit carried away there, whoops. Toro Bangkok is far from all that, thankfully. Being the last of the restaurants we'll have visited in the upper floor of the courtyard, we certainly mean what we say when we declare it to be our favourite.
Directing Twelve Angry Men

» Loni Berry, the man behind Bangkok's multicultural, English speaking theatre, Culture Collective, is set to be putting on Twelve Angry Men towards the end of this month, the first of a string of plays the theatre will be staging this season. We're uber keen to see what he's got up his sleeve for this one, considering his Lisbon Traviata won Best Production at the 2015 Bangkok Theatre Festival. And personally, we did love his musically witty Death of Miss America. From Asian stereotypes and homosexuality, to nudity, Berry's performances always tackle prickly topics that make viewers stop and think. We thought it's wise to dig a little deeper into the artistic director who's making such great, mind-altering and risky moves for theatre in Bangkok.

» Well, we do feel rather bad, but it definitely wasn't Vegetarian Festival when we visited Hickory, a smoking hot barbecue restaurant on Sukhumvit Soi 11 that cohabits a space with the jazzy Wolff's Bar. And somehow classy cocktails, walls adorned with pictures of the all-time jazz-favourites and Bourbon flavoured ribs work really well together.

» The setting: You may have been looking for an excuse to visit that swanky new hotel that opened a couple of months ago at the end of Thong Lor. Well, CHOW Café and Bar provides you with the perfect opportunity. Situated right next to the Metropole, the casual dining destination's warm wooden interior, high ceilings and open kitchen is so inviting you might not want to leave. As an establishment that aims to be open longer than it's closed, you can find yourself doing one of many things at CHOW, from eating a 4am breakfast, sipping Parisian cocktails late afternoon, to watching a late night movie on the big screen in its second larger dining area. The walls are decked with local contemporary art that's so edgy and eye-catching so it's just got everything going for it really. #lovethisplace.
Pattaya delights in Bangkok

» Devarana Spa is offering a new "creative spa retreat" package, Pattaya Delight, consisting of little elements that remind us of the unique seaside town not too far from Bangkok. We know, of all the places one could pick to base a two-hour spa treatment on, we also wondered why the high end hotel spa decided to choose Pattaya as a source for its inspiration. Before entering the room, you are offered a welcome drink to calm and cool yourself from the Bangkok heat -- some hibiscus juice or nam krajiab. We had two cups of the stuff it was so good.

» A quick 5 minute walk from Asoke BTS, past Sukhumvit soi 18, and we'll admit some pretty dank and dirty bars, you'll find a modest joint serving some meat filled brioche buns that we all need more of in our lives. More of these and we all would be a lot more happy for sure!

» Jay Sriyuksiri leads quite an interesting and full-on life. He's a part-time house DJ that goes by the name Sarayu, holding a residency at Beam and his newly founded night, UNST (UNST UNST); he's been "trying" to produce music for over a year now; he works with his family business like a good boy most of the time and he has also been involved with something a lot more interesting as of late. A project called Collect/Save, something he set up with his friends, aimed at helping Bangkok's local electronic music community become more knowledgeable in what matters to them most — music — through a series of workshops and production master classes led by industry experts and like-minded individuals.

» Chang recently launched its first global initiative to bring Thai food to the world. LUCKY world. "Chang Sensory Trails", curated by LA-based Chef Jet Tila, Thailand's Culinary Ambassador to the USA, featured a selection of mouthwatering dishes triggered from memories of his time spent in Thailand. The inaugural event was held in Singapore at the Bay Front Event Space last month and was set in a multi-sensorial playground amid music, lighting and what else, of course, but copious amounts of Chang beer. Guru was more than happy to join in on all the festivities and flavours.
