Dutch treat in Ayutthaya

» Nestled on the east bank of the Chao Phraya River in the ruins of the ancient capital of Ayutthaya, next to Wat Phananchoeng and the remains of the old Japanese quarter, is a building of red and white bricks erected in memory of the Dutch settlement which had its headquarters here from the early 17th to the mid-18th century. Opened to the general public last year, Baan Hollanda now serves as an information centre on early Thai-Dutch relations.

Up from the deep

» Now buried several metres deep under the muddy ground in a former shrimp farm in Samut Sakhon province, a millennium-old ship once sailed many oceans of the world. The vessel, 25m long, had travelled from faraway lands to transport a variety of goods to cities on this part of the Earth before it sank here during the Dvaravati period (6th-11th centuries).

» River breeze and morning sunlight softly touched our skin while a large group of Thai tourists were cruising on the Irrawaddy River. We had left the old Myanmar capital of Mandalay and were bound for three other major cities. The trip centred on Thai art in Myanmar, along with other famous cultural attractions. The art is believed to have been the work of Siamese war prisoners brought to Myanmar after the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767, and their descendants.
