Corruption endemic

News, Postbag, Published on 08/06/2019

» In my 30-plus years in Thailand, it has become quite obvious that corruption in its various forms has had a disastrous effect on the country through the failure of its institutions. Look up the effect of corruption on Google and immediately you will find that politicians, police and the judiciary are the institutions named as most affected. I have watched with disbelief as politicians, wealthy individuals and military leaders have broken laws, engaged in illegal activities and even caused deaths without any repercussions for their actions.

Every vote counts

News, Published on 29/03/2019

» The current debate over whether the party with the largest number of MPs should take the lead in forming the government, rather than the party with the largest number of votes, is misguided and does not take into account the new electoral system which a majority of Thai voters approved in a 2016 referendum.

Flawed democracy

News, Published on 23/03/2019

» There are not many letters from readers about democracy now just ahead of the Thai election. Nor did the Democracy Index 2018 get any attention in Thai or world corporate media when released a short time ago. Could it be because the country now teaching the world about democracy is not regarded as a true democracy, but ended up at 25th place as a flawed democracy in the same league as some African countries?

Watch this space

News, Postbag, Published on 22/12/2018

» Politicians and political parties are claiming Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha is unable to solve Thailand's corruption problems by referring to his deputy, and the watch scandal. If this is set to be the new standard of intolerable corruption, Thailand is moving forward. But for that to happen, politicians and parties now heavily criticising Gen Prayut have to stick to the 25 watches norm also when in power. I am sceptical, especially with the new party that wants to move "forward" by moving backwards, returning to the old democracy that was not so much of a democracy.

Lost in Thai space

News, Postbag, Published on 20/12/2018

» Having just celebrated International Migrants Day, I thought it may be the right time to ask what category myself and many like me fall into in Thailand.
