City as canvas

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 06/06/2014

» On Jun 12, a noted Thai street artist named Danaiphat Lersputtitrakan, better known as Bon, will have his first solo exhibition after prolifically spraying his works both in and out of the country. He is just one of many examples of street artists who have started to get mainstream cred in the last few years. Hotels and restaurants have employed them to adorn their interiors while some have been hired by brands to use their designs. To explore this ongoing trend of underground art going overground, we talk to Bon about his upcoming exhibition, look at a hotel covered in street art, and outline where you can buy products featuring designs from Thai street artists.

» I was on Silom Road recently when I came upon a farang man, probably in his 20s. He asked a motorcycle taxi driver how much he would charge for a lift to a nearby hotel. The driver mimed out a price of B30 with his hands. The guy mistook the gesture for B300 and became upset. The driver was offended too that the farang thought he tried to rip him off. Only after another driver explained that there was no extra zero, he gestured a wai to the driver to apologise. Both men swallowed their bruised pride before they agreed to complete the B30 transaction.

Eating for two

» Sometimes I wish it was biologically possible for me to become pregnant, just so I would have a sympathetic excuse for the various food cravings I regularly endure. I often treat the fat kid in me (and the fat kid that I am) to goong chae nam pla for that sweetness of fresh shrimp and spicy dressing. Summertime has me drooling up and down Thong Lor to quench my yearning for Japanese cold noodles, even though I avoid being outdoors like I avoid soi dogs with rabies. I can also load up on risotto and pasta like I'm expecting quadruplets. But don't feel sorry for me, dear readers. As a man who lives to eat, rather than eats to live, I'm actually fine with it.
